HD85: Rager-Kay Selected as Dem Nominee

On Thursday night, Democratic committee members convened in Selinsgrove to nominate a candidate for the state’s 85th House District.

Dr. Jennifer Rager-Kay was recommended for the Democratic nomination for the upcoming special election to fill the seat vacated by newly elected Congressman Fred Keller (R-Snyder).

According to the Daily Item, she won on the first ballot besting three other Democrats: Bonnie Hamilton, David Heayn and Adam Rosinski.

This will be Rager-Kay’s second bid for the seat. She lost to Keller, who represented the 85th district for the past 8 years, in 2018. Keller vacated from this seat after winning in bid for the 12th Congressional District.

Despite running in a GOP friendly district, Rager-Kay made a pitch about electability to the conferees Thursday night and shared her focus on a couple of key issues.

“We really have an opportunity to win this election if we all work together,” Rager-Kay said according to the Daily Item. “I have the campaign structure in place. We can win this.”

Keller defeated Rager-Kay by over 30 points in 2018 and ran unopposed in the 2016 election.

She said this campaign will focus on health care, the environment, and addressing the opioid epidemic.

Rager-Kay will face Republican David Rowe, vice chair of the East Buffalo Township board of supervisors and local businessman, in the special election on August 20.

  1. The redesigned districts by the PA Supreme Court to balance out the unfairness of those districts designed by the Republican leadership has made this particular HD85 a real uphill battle for Dems.

    1. The Supreme Court only changed the Congressional districts, not the state legislative ones.
