Philadelphia Councilwoman Helen Gym was nominated for Emily’s List’s 2017 Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award.
“EMILY’s List is proud to recognize Helen’s dedication to public service as the EMILY’s List community nominates her for the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of Emily’s List.
The award highlights women who demonstrate a “commitment to community, dedication to women and families, and determination and civility that have been the highlights of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ career” according to the release.
Gym was Philadelphia’s first Asian American Councilwoman when she was elected in 2015. Prior to her election Gym co-founded Parents United for Public Education, a grassroots organization that pushed for transparency in school budgets.
The other nominees are Nevada Assembly Majority Leader Teresa Benitez-Thompson, Mayor of Flagstaff Arizona Coral Evans, Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway, Seattle City Councilwoman Lorena González, and Virginia State Senator Jennifer McClellan.

Bravo and thank you for all you do! “FAYD!”
She voted for the soda tax and opposes charter schools. She believes that more government is the solution to every problem. She may be nice lady but this Philadelphian hopes that she remains a local political phenomenon.
This is just a scheme to add names to the Emily’s List list. But it is obviously a successful one, I must have gotten 10 emails asking me to vote for her and I live in Cambria county. A place I doubt gym has ever been or knows where we are.
A wonderful, committed woman and leader for Philadelphia (and everyone else)!
Very nice achievement. Congratulations on your success
