The race in the 8th Congressional District is now safely in the Democratic incumbents favor, according to the latest ratings from the analysts at Inside Elections.
Rep. Matt Cartwright’s (D-Lackawanna) reelection bid against GOP challenger Jim Bognet has moved from Likely Democratic to Solid Democratic in the latest ratings update on October 16.
President Donald Trump carried these boundaries in Northeast Pa. over Sec. Hillary Clinton in 2016, but former Vice President Joe Biden is expected to put up a better performance in his boyhood district, which benefits Cartwright.
“Not only will the president fail to match his 10-point victory four years ago, Trump might not win the district at all,” writes Nathan Gonzales and Jacob Rubashkin. “GOP nominee Jim Bognet needs a strong Trump showing at the top of the ballot to defeat the congressman, but that’s unlikely to happen considering Biden has at least a 7-point edge statewide. Move from Likely Democratic to Solid Democratic.”
Cartwright is currently serving his fourth term in Congress, most recently besting Republican John Chrin by just over 9 points. In 2016, Trump carried these boundaries by close to 10 points, while Cartwright fended off Republican Matt Connolly by a 7.6 point margin.
Two other national ratings outlets show Cartwright has the advantage in his reelection bid, although this is the lone outlet that describes the race as Solid Democratic.
Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball has the race as Likely Democratic, and the Cook Political Report has it as Leans Democratic.

Trump is an orange turd and Bognet is only a small piece of shit.
Bognet has run a train wreck campaign. An ad out of State and a lot smoke and mirrors as campaign themes. What did Republican donors get for their donations to Bognet? Not much.
Is the House Majority Leadership going to do anything about serial philanderer and child abuser GOP State Rep Aaron Bernstine?
In one video obtained by the USA TODAY Network, Aaron Bernstine, R-10, New Beaver, Lawrence County, is behind the camera, but his hand is shown holding a cigar and offering it to his son.
When the young boy takes a puff, Bernstine tells him to “hit it harder” and “breathe in,” followed by a woman’s voice saying, “No.”
A second video has Bernstine again off camera asking his son, “What are we going to chase in Nashville?” The boy replies in a whisper, “Cadillac p—ssy,” using a vulgar term for vagina.
This seems like a story from an old movie about some crazy Dad teaching his kid inappropriate sh*t.
