Jane Orie Sentenced to Prison

Jane Orie has been sentenced to at least 2 and a half years in prison, with a maximum of 10 years. The former state Senator was convicted in March on 14 of 24 charges related to illegal campaign activity, misuse of taxpayer resources and forgery.

Reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

She was immediately taken into custody after the sentencing hearing today in Downtown Pittsburgh.

She made no statements. She had tears in her eyes as she was led away. [Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey] Manning called her actions a “flagrant and disgraceful violation” of the lawyers’ oath.

Restitution will be decided within 30 days based on legal briefs not yet submitted.

The statutory maximum penalty on the five felony counts is 3 1/2 to seven years in prison. Someone sentenced to less than two years’ incarceration can serve that time in the county jail. Anything longer calls for the sentence to be served in state prison.

Orie had already resigned from the PA Senate; a special election to fill the remainder of her term is set for August 7. Former U.S. Rep. and Orie political rival Melissa Hart is the front runner for the GOP nomination and the seat.

Her sister, PA Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin, faces similar charges.

  1. EVIL IS AS EVIL DOES. SHE WILL HOPEFULLY GET THE MAX! NICE TO KNOW THAT SHE PUTS HER LEATHER PANTS ON ONE LEG AT A TIME TOO.

  2. Great to see a corrupt , lying Republican headed for the state pen. If EVERY corrupt and lying Republican was sent to prison, could the working people of this country build prisons fast enough to hold them all?

  3. Jay–

You’re right, they forced her to submit forged document at trial and to swear to their veracity under oath. It was totally someone else’s fault.

  4. I have had limited interaction with Jane and she got exactly what she deserved. When you live in glass houses you should not throw stones!

  5. Jane Orie was one of the best and most dedicated senators Pennsylvania ever had. Few PA senators were as devoted to their job or helping those in need than Jane. For her to be singled out and persecuted in this manner is vile and disgusting.
