State Representative John Taylor, who also served as the Chairman of the Philadelphia Republican Party, announced he will not be running for re-election next year.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Taylor is leaving to spend more time with his family.
“It sounds like a cliche but spending time with family is a thing. They sacrifice enough,” Taylor said.
Taylor will remain involved in politics, and in his role as a ward leader in Philadelphia.
“It’s not the end of my political career. It’s just the end of my elective career,” Taylor told the Inquirer.
Taylor has served in the state House for 17 terms, starting his tenure in 1984.

Rep. Taylor is a stand-up, straight shooter whose leadership will be missed in Harrisburg.
I am going to miss John Taylor. He did a great representing our neighborhood since 1984. It will be a great loss to the 177th District. Hopefully, his replacement will be half as good. I wish him well in his retirement. He went out a winner which not many people in this business can say.
The Democrats will find a corrupt Bob Brady flunky, who was a Hillary-Lover, in 2016.
i think for the republicans should hold this seat with a female candidate is to run for the seat in 2018.
Good. He was corrupt
Disappointing. An effective Rep. we cannot replace.
Apparently Hillary Clinton got 59% of the vote in this district. Katie McGinty got 58%. Josh Shapiro got 63% in this district.
This has to be a Democratic pickup next term, unless the Republicans run an *extraordinary* candidate.
Don’t be so sure, the incompetent goons at HDCC who think themselves to be gods gifts to politics will somehow find an incredibly lousy candidate with tons of legal issues who won’t live in the district and somehow won’t get on the ballot. Rinse, lather, repeat, cycle after cycle.
Well, HDCC doesn’t appoint candidates to run in special elections; local parties leaders do. But I’ll cede your point about the shit-show in North Philly from earlier this year. It also doesn’t help that there are like 100 candidates who want to run, two being ward leaders.
But Philly showed in 2016 hand-picked candidates can still be vulnerable to primary challengers.
He is squeezed by moronic millennials moving into his district who know more about moustaches and hipster skinny jeans than they do about the value of one of PA’s best electeds. Shame Philadelphia has pushed him out. Enjoy the family time.
Agreed he was a voice for Philadelphia as a member of the majority party in HBG. And while not as much a right wing ass like Turzai and Metcalfe, Taylor has backed them on numerous issues including that draconian abortion bill.
Sure, John Taylor has done a lot for the city. But he also took some positions these “mornoic millenials” nor I aren’t too crazy about either. And FTR, I’m far from wearing skinny jeans and wouldn’t be caught dead with a PBR. I’m also a North Catholic grad giving you some perspective.
Did Trump or Clinton win his district?
Clinton quite comfortably
