Johnson and Sanchez Retain Dem Nominations for Philly Council

Kenyatta-JohnsonPhiladelphia City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson has won the Democratic Party’s nomination for the 2nd Council District, effectively retaining his seat.

Johnson defeated challenger Ori Feibush, collecting 63 percent of the vote with 170 of 175 precincts reporting.

Johnson will run unopposed in November, as no Republicans mounted a campaign during the primary.

Philadelphia’s 2nd Council District covers parts of Center City, South and Southwest Philadelphia, the Point Breeze neighborhood, as well as the Navy Yard.

In the 7th Council District in Philadelphia, Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez has emerged from a hard-fought battle from Manny Morales.

For much of the night, the race had been neck-and-neck, but with just over 98 percent of precincts reporting, Sanchez has picked up 53.82% of the vote.

Morales’ campaign had faced some difficulties, including accusations of racist, anti-gay and anti-poor messages on Facebook in March. The city’s Democratic Party rescinded their endorsement of Morales after the incident.
