John Callahan issues K-12 plan to improve our schools and help our kids succeed
BETHLEHEM, PA. – Today Congressional candidate and Mayor of Bethlehem John Callahan was joined by teachers from every school district in Pennsylvania’s 15th Congressional District to discuss the state of education in Pennsylvania and unveil Callahan’s plan to help our children receive the best education possible. Callahan also called out Congressman Dent for his recent vote to fire almost 6,000 Pennsylvania teachers. Dent’s vote would have meant bigger classrooms, less personal attention to individual students and ultimately would have resulted in more kids falling through the cracks. Callahan also condemned the Race to the Top program for rationing educational resources based on a one size fits all contest.
“I’m honored to have the support of teachers from every School District in the Lehigh Valley,” said Mayor John Callahan. “Today I am introducing common sense priorities that I will fight for in Congress to provide a better education for our children. Congressman Dent recently voted to fire almost 6,000 Pennsylvania teachers which would have resulted in bigger classroom sizes, less personal attention for students and more kids falling through the cracks.”
“We shouldn’t be basing the future of our children on a contest and that is why I oppose the Race to the Top.”
Mayor Callahan introduced three specific ideas to improve the K-12 education:
• Loan Forgiveness for Teachers in High Needs areas• Expanded scholarships for high needs fields• Low interest home loans for teachers that choose to live and work in high needs school districts.
