July 5th Playbook

Welcome back to the work week, politicos. Sorry for the delay this morning – we got caught up in some storm-related power outages around Pittsburgh. In a pre-holiday surprise, State Rep. Hal English (R-Allegheny) announced he won’t seek a fourth term. His North Hills seat is a reach for Dems (went for Trump by 7 points), but could be in play.

Rep. English Makes Surprise Retirement Announcement: The North Hills State Rep. will not seek a fourth term. A TBD replacement will face Dem Betsy Monroe in the fall.

Two national columnists took a look at the women driving progressive activism in PA. Michelle Goldberg profiles some of the women mobilized by Trump’s presidency for NYT. Salena Zito characterizes the rise of Sara Innamorato, Summer Lee and the DSA as the cycle of “rebellion, realignment, and repudiation of the status quo,” that follows an election loss.

And could Lt. Gov. Stack become City Councilman Stack? City & State takes a look and the outgoing pol isn’t ruling it out.
