Kathleen Kane Launches AG Campaign Web Video

By Keegan Gibson, Managing Editor

Kathleen Granahan Kane, the northeast PA prosecutor who is seeking the Democratic nod for Attorney General, has released a new web video introducing herself to voters.

The 3 minute video focuses on her time as Assistant Lackawanna County District Attorney, testimonials from local law enforcement officials, and her personal background being raised in Scranton.

“We deserve a Democrat who is qualified to serve as Pennsylvania’s top prosecutor,” said he campaign in an email accompanying the release of the video. “Kathleen’s career spans thousands of cases from putting murderers behind bars to protecting seniors from elder abuse and standing up to a corrupt judge.”

Kane also takes aim at some of her competitors in the AG primary.

“We need a prosecutor to be the chief law enforcement officer, not a politician,” she says directly to the camera. “You can’t prosecute special interests, you can’t prosecute politicians from any political party if your next job is going to depend on these people.”

Kane doesn’t have the name ID of some other candidates in the race like former Congressman Patrick Murphy, but she could benefit from the likelihood that Murphy and former Philadelphia prosecutor Dan McCaffery will split the southeast PA vote if each stays in the race. Other rumored Democratic candidates include former Philadelphia DA Lynne Abraham and Allegheny County DA Steve Zappala.

Insiders point to her connections with Kane is Able, a shipping and logistics company based in Scranton. Her husband is Chief Customer Strategy Officer there, and it is expected that Kane will be able to invest significant personal wealth in her campaign.

Republican prospects include State Senator John Rafferty (R-Montgomery), who worked in the AG’s office in the early 90s, Cumberland County DA Dave Freed, and Montgomery County DA Risa Ferman.

The current AG, appointee Linda Kelly, has said she will not seek a full term. No Democrat has won a term as AG since it became an elected position in 1980.

The best moment in the comes at the 2:51 mark of the video:

“Even on the street today, I’ll be in the donut shop. Someone will scream to me, ‘You’re the one who put me in jail.’ And my response is always ‘You’re the one who put you in jail.’”

  3. A few years as an ADA in Scranton def prepares you to be the top cop in all of PA. Give me a lifelong prosecutor or a soldier please.

  4. Oh stop it. Shes a tough cookie and would be a breath of fresh air. I believe she is solely focused on Attorney General, and has solid credentials.

  5. She looks a little bit like Michelle Bachmann. I wonder if that will confuse Republicans into voting for her?

  6. Although, it should be noted, the fact that numerous ex-convicts are running into Kathleen Kane in the donut shop, then either she is not very effective at securing lengthy sentences, or somebody should be looking into why there are so many ex-convicts hanging out at the same donut shop. This seems like a public safety issue.
