Leach Endorses Cohen for City Council

Daylin-Leach-portrait-2013-loresSherrie Cohen’s campaign for Philadelphia City Council is racking up supporters this week.

Today, Cohen picked up an endorsement from State Sen. Daylin Leach (who her campaign called a “progressive icon”) for an at-large spot on the Council.

Leach said he was honored to endorse Cohen’s “historic” campaign. She is the first openly-LGBT Democratic candidate to run for the office.

“Sherrie is a proven activist, not only for the LGBT community, but on a host of issues important to progressives,” Leach said. “During this campaign, I have watched her continue to speak up for working Philadelphians and push for an increase in the minimum wage, expanded protections for the LGBT community and housing policies that don’t displace low-income workers.”

Leach called on Philadelphians to put an openly-LGBT candidate into office and to increase the number of women holding office in their city.

“I know she will be a passionate advocate for education, women’s right, LGBT rights and criminal justice reform,” Leach said. “We need progressive leaders in all levels of government and Sherrie will be an effective leader in City Council.

Cohen — who picked up endorsements earlier this week from former Governor and Philly Mayor Ed Rendell and Lt. Gov. Mike Stack, along with State Reps. Brian Sims and W. Curtis Thomas — said she was humbled by Leach’s endorsement.

“As a life-long progressive activist, it is humbling to not only be endorsed by every progressive group endorsing in this cycle, but also to receive the support of Sen. Leach who has been a champion for marriage equality, fair elections, and medical marijuana legalization, which has passed the State Senate twice because of his leadership,” Cohen responded. “Sen. Leach is well known across Pennsylvania for standing up for progressive priorities and providing solutions that help working people succeed. I’m proud to have earned his support and I look forward to working with him to get the funding our students deserve from Harrisburg.”
