Rep. Summer Lee (D-12) had a pretty good day on Tuesday.
The freshman Congresswoman from Allegheny County picked up endorsements from three House Democratic leaders – House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) – in her quest to retain the 12th Congressional District seat in Congress.
While Lee has been on the opposite side of the issue regarding the Israel-Hamas war, the Democratic leaders jumped in line behind the incumbent who faces a primary challenge from Edgewood Borough Councilwomen Bhavini Patel and Laurie MacDonald, who leads a victims services organization.
“A civil rights champion, advocate for organized labor and the first Black woman to represent Pennsylvania in Congress, Summer Lee has worked tirelessly to deliver for working families,” the three leaders said in a statement. “Since her first days in Congress, Summer has been a fighter for the people – working to keep our communities safe, create good-paying union jobs and protect fundamental rights like reproductive freedom.”
Lee’s stance on the Israel-Hamas situation has angered pro-Israel groups, as she has emerged as a solidly pro-Palestinian voice within the Democratic caucus, voting against a multiple pro-Israel measures widely supported by lawmakers both parties. The announcement by Jeffries, Clark and Aguilar is the first for a progressive incumbent facing attacks from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and other lobbying groups.
According to The Intercept, AIPAC attempted to recruit two other candidates to challenge Lee in a primary – state Rep. Lindsay Powell (D-21) and Allegheny County Controller Corey O’Connor.
“Our progressive movement is creating a blueprint, not just for Western Pennsylvania, but for our entire country for what it looks like to beat Trumpism by leading with compassion and equity and justice,” Lee said in a statement, released Wednesday morning.
