Lee Pulls Out of CAIR Fundraiser

Rep. Summer Lee

Facing criticism over her participation, Rep. Summer Lee (D-12) has canceled her scheduled appearance at a fundraiser for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Lee was slated to provide “special remarks” at the annual fundraising banquet for CAIR at the Springfield Country Club on Saturday.

The freshman Congresswoman was listed on the program along with three others, including Ibrahim Jaaber, an author and former University of Pennsylvania basketball star, who has called Israelis “demons” who lie to “cover their horns.

Also on the program is Shaykh Yasir Fahmy, a clergyman and academic who preaches at the al-Falah mosque in Bridgewater, New Jersey, who has denied all video and photo evidence of the horrors of Hamas’ attack on October 7 and said that Palestinians were guilty of no brutality, and that the Zionists are the only ones who have committed atrocities.

One of Lee’s primary opponents – Edgewood Borough Council member Bhavini Patel – called on Lee to step away from the fundraiser, while GOP candidate James Hayes was also critical of the scheduled appearance.

Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Dave McCormick went a step further, calling on Lee to resign and challenged his Democratic opponent, Sen. Bob Casey Jr., to do the same.

Gov. Josh Shapiro, as well as Jewish lawmakers such as Rep. Dan Frankel (D-Allegheny) and Sen. Judy Schwank (D-Berks), also criticized Lee.

For her part, Lee said she learned about Fahmy’s prior comments from a news report on Monday. She said that she does not condone or endorse any of the other speakers’ statements. She said the goal of attending the event was to join other elected officials and support Muslims against the rising tide of anti-Muslim sentiment growing since the war broke out.

“I have and continue to condemn antisemitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, and transphobia everywhere it arises,” Lee said in a statement. ‘“To prevent the Muslim community from being the target of any more politically motivated Islamophobia and to ensure my Jewish and LGBTQ+ constituents know their concerns are heard, I will not be attending this event any longer.”
