Legislative Leaders Fail To Produce New Boundaries

Legislative leaders met in negotiation this morning and did not agree on new maps for the General Assembly. They will meet again next Tuesday.

The longer this plays out, the less likelihood there will be that the primary for the state House and state Senate will be changed. The primary is currently scheduled for Tuesday, April 24th.

After the hearing, the four caucus chairmen deflected questions about when the Commonwealth’s residents can expect a new legislative map.

  1. I suspect the General Assembly leaders will be slow to grasp there is no way they can come up with a deft Plan B that gerrymanders in the grand old style, while somehow complying with the Supreme Ct ruling. That ruling was revolutionary in scope: it severely limits the ability of reapportioners to tinker with the map. Under Castille’s ruling, gerrymanderers simply cannot get what they’re used to getting anymore. Mapping software may have to be rewritten. It’s a big deal…. Unlikely they can pull out the Map of Their Dreams in time for a fall primary – & gin up plans for the same within a week or two – as they would have to do to void the Apr. 24 primary.
