Longshot Dems Raise Little for Guv Bid

Myers LitzThe two lesser-known candidates in the Democratic primary for Governor don’t have as much to show for their campaigns as their opponents.

Pastor Max Myers and Lebanon County Commissioner Jo Ellen Litz raised a combined $34,000 in 2013, according to campaign finance reports.

Max Myers:

Myers raised around $30,000 in total. A majority of his contributions came from himself and his friends and family. He now has $1,047.21 cash on hand.

Myers’ largest listed contribution is $2,000, while the smallest ones pop up throughout the report as $8.01 or $4.59 – generally from himself.

Myers spent almost all of what he raised in 2013. $5,000 went toward the maintenance of his website, and $7,800 went to maintaining a database of donors and supporters. He also gave donations to various county Democratic committees.

Myers chose to pay for the daily expenses of his campaign, such as the occasional $50 for gas and $30 for lunch, and count them as loans. $12,000 of his total spending went toward repaying those incremental self-loans.

Originally, Myers was a Protestant minister in Cumberland County before he decided to try his hand at politics. He ran a school for ministers in Mechanicsburg, the Global School of Supernatural Ministry. As a minister, some of Myers’ beliefs could clash with those of most Dems, such as his refusal to take an official stance on abortion in the pro-choice vs. pro-life debate.

Jo Ellen Litz:

In her campaign, Litz raised only $4,182, all from friends and family who mostly live in Lebanon County. Her largest contribution received was $1,000, while the smallest went all the way down to $5.

Litz spent a total of $1,393.44, $500 of which went toward voter data and $893.44 went toward printing her campaign literature.

Currently, Litz has $3,235.48 cash on hand.

Litz was first elected as county commissioner in 1995 and she has been re-elected four times since then. She has a little bit of political experience beyond her position as commissioner, albeit only in the campaigning department. In 2010, she lost the state Senate race to incumbent Mike Folmer.

  2. They have lasted longer than Pawlowski and he raised a lot more.

If they can get on the ballot, they should be allowed to attend any debates.

Imagine if they are excluded from a debate and then some gas main explosion occurs at the debate. They become the front runners.

I admire you greatly for fighting for what you believe in. You now have a great story to tell your friends and family. You tried to make a difference and move things forward. For that, I am very grateful as a citizen of PA and a politico.

In saying that, it is time to drop out of the race and let the big dogs run with it.
