Luzerne County Council Recap

By Jamie Brackman, Contributing Writer

Monday’s PoliticsPA preview of the Luzerne Municipal County Council election highlighted a few choice candidates out of the wide array.  At the end of polling Tuesday, Luzerne Democrats nominated 11 council candidates under the new home rule legislation.  Politics PA updated readers on the Live Election Results as they were released.

The first candidates to show promise in an early count were Edward A. Brominski who topped the poll on the Democratic side with 134 votes, and Steven J. Urban who led the Republicans with 54 votes.  Urban is the son of Steven A. Urban who ran as a Democrat in the election.

Brominski is a former Luzerne County council chairman, and the county had a 500,000 dollar surplus when he last left office.  Brominski was one the oldest candidates, and he finished in 4th place amongst Democrats with 9891 (4.42%) votes, which should ensure him a seat on the council.

Urban (Sr) was elected as a Republican in 1999 and has served as a Luzerne county council member since then.  Urban became a Democrat last year, and despite some bad PR for the switch was very popular amongst democratic voters.  Urban led Democrats overall with 12,142 (5.24%) of the total votes.  Urban (Jr) led Republicans with 8,865  (8.02%).

Linda McClosky Houck came in second place amongst Democrats with 9,739 (4.80%) votes.  Houck ran as a representative of the working class families of Luzerne county, and unlike most other candidates who took a similar strategy, she met with success.

Jim Bobeck was third in line amongst Democrats with  9,419  (4.64%) of votes.  Jim ran as a very personal candidate as is evidenced by his website which includes pictures of his wife and children.  Jim served as the Chairman of the Luzerne County Home Rule Transition Committee which prepared the way for the new Home Rule Government.

The remaining Dems in the top 11 spots were Jane Walsh-Waitkus, Eileen M. Sorokas, Salvatore Licata, Tim McGinley, Michelle Bednar, M. Theresa Morcavage, and Elaine Maddon Curry.

Rounding out the GOP nominations were Rick Morelli, Kathleen M. Dobash, John Ruckno, Harry Haas, Blythe H. EvansIII, William Bill James, Eugene L. Kelleher, Gina Nevenglosky, Joyce Dombroski-Gebhardt and Michael Cabell.

One Response

  1. Brominksi and Steve Urban are both former Luzerne County COMMISSIONERS–not the same thing as a county council member. This is the first year that Luzerne is electing county council members, since this is the first year that Luzerne has voted for county council–prior to the Home Rule charter being enacted, there was no county council and there won’t be one until whatever winners from the council primary who make it through the general get sworns in.
