Maggi Accuses Murphy of Ethics Violations; Murphy Fires Back

With primary season over, nominees have now turned their attention from fratricidal races to their new opponents.

Washington County Commissioner and 18th district Democratic congressional nominee Larry Maggi struck first today, releasing a statement critical of incumbent Republican Tim Murphy’s office expenditures and his support of the Paul Ryan budget – a common attack from the party.

Maggi said that Murphy has taken on pay raises and spent over $275,000 in taxpayer money on campaign-style mailings for campaign purposes; while such mailings are legal if they are informative, mailings that are politically driven are not. The practice is fairly common for incumbents everywhere.

Maggi also charged that using such a large amount of taxpayer money makes Murphy the “sixth most wasteful member out of the 435 in Congress.”

Murphy’s promises to cut spending also have been neglected, according to the Maggi campaign, who said that Murphy has chosen instead to slash money where it is most needed: in benefits for soldiers and the elderly.

“Tim Murphy voted against giving active duty soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan a $1,500 bonus and he voted to make seniors pay $6,000 out of pocket per year for health insurance. The time is long overdue to end Tim Murphy’s spending spree,” said Maggi’s campaign in a press release.

Murphy’s campaign manager James Genovese said that while Maggi’s aggressive attacks are not surprising, the topics he chose to focus his attacks on are.

“Without a positive platform or any successful accomplishments to run on, it’s no surprise Larry Maggi is in the gutter engaging in these false attacks.”

Genovese said that while Murphy never voted for pay increases, Maggi “supports and gladly accepts his permanent automatic Commissioner’s pay raise which has nearly doubled his taxpayer-funded salary over the past decade.”

Genovese also said most of Maggi’s accusations can be turned around and applied to his own campaign, such as a bid for sheriff in which Maggi purchased supplies like coloring books, toy badges and pencils to hand out to voters.

  1. Howard, your grammar and spelling is awful and it is hard to take your views seriously. I laugh while reading your comment because how dumb you sound and how factually incorrect you are.

  2. this election is about the 1% against the 99%. it is time for class warfare , long overdue . dick cheney gets a new heart , and we pay the bill . the republicans want to replace medicare with a voucher . even if you are a republican , you must realise that you will lose your house if you get sick . if you can not pay the bill , you will end up in court and the judge will rule that you must surrender your assets . this is the republican ryan budget plan and tim murphey supports this plan . good luck

  3. There’s a great quote in Sal Paolantonio’s book about Frank Rizzo where a Philly civil rights organizer, in endorsing Rizzo’s weak challenger Thatcher Longstreth said, “you ain’t much baby, but you’re all we got.” The same is true with this race and Larry Maggi.

While Larry Maggi isn’t perfect, he’d make a much better Congressman than Tim Murphy. The last thing in the world Murphy wants to do is defend his record of voting in lock-step with George W. Bush and supporting the policies that sent this country off the fiscal cliff. I’m not shocked that Murphy’s campaign is talking about how as a sheriff, Maggi’s office distributed coloring books and plastic badges to kids. He’s got nothing else to talk about.

  4. If ever there was a need for a third party, it’s this race. Get your act together, Libertarians, even you doofuses have got to have someone better than these two buffoons.

  5. I heard fineburg is spending campaign money on a vacation in Maui. Can someone confirm? If true, he’s a grade-A hypocrite.

  6. Gutsy move by Maggi considering his dirty secrets are spreading like wildfire. Since he’s ticked off some powerful people, it’s only a matter of time before everyone outside the courthouse hear the rumors…

  7. Politics pa ranked this as a potentially vunerable seat. I thought Evan Feinberg said it was a safe seat??? Good thing he’s not the Republican nominee.
