Man in Charge of York School District Recovery Resigns

david_meckleyDavid Meckley, brought in over two years ago to oversee the recovery of the York City School District, has resigned.

Meckley was appointed to the position of Chief Recovery Officer by the Corbett Administration in 2012 to help overhaul and improve the York City School District. The district had been facing financial and academic issues.

Some of Meckley’s ideas and proposals were met with resistance and controversy. The legality of his receivership giving him autonomous power over the district’s recovery plan was questioned. Meckley also proposed to make each public school in the York City School District a charter school.

Governor Tom Wolf, in a statement, thanked Meckley for his service but also continued to push his own budget proposal.

“I am thankful to David Meckley for his service to the York City School District,” said Wolf, “The fact of the matter is that school districts across Pennsylvania are struggling as a result of misguided funding cuts that have starved our classrooms of resources and put our children at a disadvantage.”

Wolf continued, saying, “My budget would provide a $5.6 million increase in funding and more than $29 million in property tax relief for the York City School District…I look forward to working with elected officials and community leaders to move the York City School District forward.”
