Marino Cites Health Issues For Resignation

Former Rep. Tom Marino (R-Lycoming) said that health issues were the reason he resigned from Congress in an exclusive interview with the Daily Item on Thursday.

“I am not well,” Marino said to the Daily Item. “But I am getting better. I had surgery and they found my lining in my kidney was deteriorating and tissue was blocking everything so they went in and cleaned everything out.”

Marino said he currently does not have cancer, but has battled it since 1999 when half of his left kidney was removed and the other half removed in 2009. 60% of his right kidney was removed in 2012.

Marino told the Daily Item that he knew he couldn’t be able to serve the 12th District.

“I knew I couldn’t serve my 15 counties and if I needed to be in a hospital. I wanted to be home with my family,” he said to the Daily Item. “I wanted to try to keep my sickness private but it was out there and people were concerned and asking. I still have a tumor but it is not growing. So I am fine for now but that could change in a week or in a year.”

He said he was thankful for having the opportunity to represent his constituents and selected to resign in hopes that the special election would coincide with the Pennsylvania primary date, saving taxpayers money.

Marino resigned on Jan 23 after just beginning his fifth term in Congress earlier that month.

In his initial press release announcing his resignation, he stated he was leaving Congress to take a job in the private sector.

The special election to replace Marino is set for May 21, the same day as the Pennsylvania primary.

  1. No need to ponder the dynamics of the resignation because it really doesn’t matter. This is an “R” seat for sure. Special election VERY heavily favored to “R’s”.

  2. You’d think a GOPer could at least tell the truth when he was not running again. NOPE. Too used to lying.

  3. Why did Marino change his reason for quitting? He clearly stated previously he was resigning to accept a position in the private sector. Now we are told there was no job offer. Why didn’t he initially say he was resigning for health reasons? This is suspicious. Is he now going to meddle in the nomination for the special election?
