McAndrew Captures 32nd District House Seat

Joe McAndrew

As much as things change, they stay the same.

Democrat Joe McAndrew won Tuesday’s special election in the 32nd District to replace the late Tony DeLuca.

DeLuca, a fellow Democrat, had held the seat since 1983 and was reelected posthumously in November after passing the previous month.

McAndrew pulled in 74.55 percent of the vote in the boroughs of Oakmont, Plum and Verona along with Penn Hills Township to defeat GOP challenger Clayton Walker.

He captured 67 of the 68 precincts, falling short by 13 votes in Plum District 21.

The outcome does not come as a surprise, as Democrats held a 2-to-1 advantage in voter registration.

McAndrew, a long-time fixture in the local Democratic party from Penn Hills, looks to advance a more worker-friendly and progressive agenda. He has served as the Executive Director of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee and more recently with the PADems as a member of Congressman-elect Chris Deluzio’s campaign team. McAndrew currently serves as chair of the Penn Hills Democratic Committee.

Democrats captured all three Allegheny County special elections, to give the party a 102-100 advantage in the Pennsylvania House and a majority for the first time since 2010.
