Rob McCord has taken a concrete step toward a 2014 bid. The state Treasurer this week formed a new campaign committee called “McCord for Governor”.

The filing with the Pa. Department of State and obtained by PoliticsPA shows McCord signed and submitted the paperwork Monday.

Long seen as a likely challenger to Gov. Tom Corbett, McCord has travelled the state since November – when he handily won a second term as Treasurer. He’s been meeting with party regulars and activists, including a group of SEIU workers on Saturday.

“This new committee is a reflection of the fact that, over the last few months, Rob has heard from voters and community leaders from around the state that they want a change in Harrisburg and he’s putting the pieces in place to deliver that change,” said Mark Nevins, a McCord campaign spokesman.

“The fact is, we can’t keep electing professional, career politicians and expect things to be different. As a business leader, not a career politician, Rob is uniquely qualified to deliver real results.”

Nevins didn’t specify a timeline for an official announcement.

McCord, 54, got his start in the private sector as an entrepreneur and investor. He was first elected in 2008. He resides in Montgomery County with his wife and two sons.

He faces a crowded primary with five candidates already announced. Two former  Dept’s of Environmental Protection Secretaries, John Hanger and Katie McGinty, pastor Max Myers, Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz (D-Montco) and former Revenue Secretary Tom Wolf.

Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski and state Sen. Mike Stack (D-Phila) are also floating bids.

Pa. campaign finance law allows unlimited transfers between campaign accounts. McCord could use all of the $1.61 million he reported at the end of 2012 for a gubernatorial bid.

  1. McCord lacks substance and sophistication more than people realize and is very political. He is not much better than Ally Schwartz though. Appearances do matter though and McCord has enough charisma to win people over. Ally comes across as too canned.

It would be great to see McGinty catch some momentum, but odds are long.

A ham has more charisma and intelligence than Corbett. But somehow, PA voters will makes this a very close race.

  2. I be believe the Treasurer McCord would be the best Democrat to take on Governor Corbett. Is passionate about the issues, great resume and he can raise $ with the best of them.

Open question: Who would you like to see be his running mate as Lt. Gov?

  3. Finally! Go, Rob, go. We can’t let Corbett off the hook next year by nominating the wrong person!!!

  4. He has my vote…best candidate in Democratic field…person best suited to retiring Governor Corbett.
