Former DEP Sec. Katie McGinty has filed the paperwork and is officially a candidate for Governor. Former PA Dems Chair TJ Rooney will chair her campaign.
“As a former Democratic Party chair and state legislator, T.J. Rooney brings a wealth of statewide political experience to our campaign to create jobs, improve public schools and help families succeed,” McGinty said. “Under Gov. Tom Corbett, Pennsylvania has fallen badly behind. T.J. and I strongly believe we can do better.”
She created the “McGinty for Governor” committee this week.
“Katie is lucky to have T.J. on her team,” said former Governor Ed Rendell. “T.J. knows Pennsylvania’s political landscape as well as anyone. We wouldn’t have made some of the significant gains we made as a party without his leadership.
The move makes it all the less likely that Rendell will pick sides in the crowded primary. Rooney was a close Rendell ally during the Governor’s two terms, but so too was Mary Isenhour, the PA Dems’ former Executive Director and Rooney’s current business partner. Isenhour is working for York businessman and former Revenue Sec. Tom Wolf.
PoliticsPA broke the news in March that McGinty had formed an exploratory committee.
She faces a growing gubernatorial field which includes Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz and likely also state Treasurer Rob McCord.
