State Sen. Charles McIlhinney (R-Bucks) announced his retirement from the state House today, becoming the third Bucks county elected officials who announced their retirements this year.
“I entered public service to make a difference for my community and the people who live here. I can look back proudly at my time in office and my accomplishments, but now it is time to move on and allow a new leader to take over,” McIlhinney said.
McIlhinney has served in the state Senate since 2006, after being a state Rep. since 1998.
McIlhinney joins state Reps. Scott Petri and Kathy Watson as Republican officials from Bucks County who will not be seeking re-election in 2018. Petri left his role after agreeing to take over as the executive director of the Philadelphia Parking Authority. Watson announced Wednesday she would not be seeking re-election.
In the wake of historic Democratic wins at the county and local level in the Philadelphia collar counties, including Bucks, the retirements could be a sign of things to come in the southeast as Republican seats become more competitive and could flip in 2018.

That’s quite a trick for a state senator to retire from the state House.
If John Cordisco has a brain in his head he will be running Brian Galloway who already has performed well countywide and has no major baggage. Pat Poprick will likely run another insider who will be out of touch with the lower half of the district.
No major baggage? I just his DUI doesn’t count.
That’s John, not Brian.
Brian Galloway would be great!
The BCDC is running Santarsiero. Announces Saturday.
God help us. Count on another 16 years of him doing nothing in office on the tax payers expense. The career politician and millionaire from Lower Makefield doesn’t really care about people, it’s clearly always about his own success and getting to a higher office. Shame on Cordisco and anyone else if they support him!
I think the Dems already had a candidate for that seat (though I don’t know the name)
I think for the Democrats have a male candidate is to run for this seat in 2018 and for this seat will be a Democratic Gain as well.
Senator McIlhinney has helped a lot of people in Bucks County over the years and I wish him well.
1. McIlhinney’s official page indicates he has been in the Senate since 2007, not 2006.
2. The metadata on the headshot is a nice touch.
3. This seems to indicate McIlhinney sees the writing on the wall and is off to greener pastures on a high note.
Prediction: GOPers run Quinn, Dems run Santarsiero.
God help us all if the Dems run out-of-touch Lower Makefield millionaire Santar-zero, a slimy wall street corporate lawyer turned career politician and probably the most over-rated Bucks pol of all time. He was in office for 16 years and didn’t even pass a single bill or do anything, so everyone can expect the same for the empty suit if he goes to the State Senate. Bucks County deserves better and everyone knows it.
Santarserio wasnt in office even 10 years.
