McLaughlin, Kunselman, and Nichols Win Superior Court Seats, Fourth Seat too Close to Call

Democratic Judges Maria McLaughlin, Debbie Kunselman, and Carolyn Nichols won seats on the state Superior Court.  The fourth seat is too close to call at the time of writing.

With 99.21% of precincts reporting in, District Attorney Craig Stedman, and Judge Mary Murray are separated by approximately 5,000 votes, with Murray in the lead.

The winner of the two will join McLaughlin, Kunselman, and Nichols on the Superior Court for a 10 year term.

If the results hold steady with Murray on top, every statewide office up for election this year will be won by a female candidate.

  1. The GOP effort was a joke. Does the GOP even have a bench of women judges? I appeared before her in her role as a magistrate and she lacked ability there. But you have to hand it to her for her political acumen. She was smart enough to know that she probably could not win a CP seat in Allegheny and that the GOP state party was so weak they could not get a Philly judge through in the Primary. So my guess is that party discipline in the GOP Primary process is a thing of the past.

    1. Buddy, the problem lies with the vast majority of Republican voters and supporters.

That”Philly judge” that could not get through the GOP primary was black. If you didn’t notice, you party really hates non-white people so obviously the GOP “Philly judge” lost. Majority of Republican voters noticed she is black and automatically said nope.

And no, the GOP doesn’t have a bench of women judges. Your party hates women too.

You live in a big bubble or under a big rock. One of those two.

And if you don’t believe me, then continue to be ignorant and ignore a study that came out that showed Trump supporters become angry when they see a picture of a black person.

  2. Superior Court Judge-Elect Mary Murray needs to send Jules Mermelstein a big Thank You note. It seems that 95% of his 103,000 votes came from Superior Court Judge Gregory Moulton’s tally. If Jules Mermelstein stayed out of the race. The Democrats would have swept all four Superior Court seats.

    1. I don’t think that’s true, I voted for the 2 anti-establishment candidates and those 2 only- Jules and Mary Murray. I would never have voted for Moulton

    2. Mary Murray needs to thank Val Digiorgio for endorsing a slate of white men. Mary Murray only was elected because she was a woman…period. Her resume can’t hold a candle to any of the other candidates, but that doesn’t matter in judicial races. GOP leadership is weak and should have recognized this early on. Instead, they went with the “buddy system” and the Dems cashed in …again! As a matter of fact, Digiorgio sent out a flyer in the Primary AGAINST Murray. To Murray’s credit she hung in there, didn’t care about the endorsement or the bar association recommendation, and did her thing. Good for her.

  3. Val is the person who deserves great credit for turning what was once a solid Republican County – Chester – into Democratic territory. With few exceptions Republicans were destroyed yesterday. Like
Debbie Wasserman Schultz- Val D in an incompetent , inept and pathetic manager leading his party to certain defeat next year.
People would rather vote for Democrats who stand for something than the kind of mediocre candidates offered by Republicans. At least next year, we can retire the three stooges- Meehan Fitzpatrick and Costello. By the way political hacks like Asher should resign- with all their money they have almost completely decimated the PA Republican Party. Too bad we didn’t have a better alternative than Toomey the Baloney Mail last year. If he continues to be a stooge for McConnell- we will vote out any Republican so we can send a message- Better a Democrat than a jackass,!

      1. He was an ‘incumbent’ but he was just appointed to the Superior Court a year or so ago by Governor Wolf.

        1. They picked up 1 on Commonwealth court it will be 7R to 2D when the new judges are sworn in in Jan. On Supreme Court Sally Munday is taking the place of a Republican. Not sure of the make up of the superior court, although none of the courts are particularly partisan. They have not gone done the partisan path like the Federal courts.

  4. It’s clear that Val is going to have the same lackluster results on the state level that he produced in his own county. Do the right thing and step aside now. 2018 is too important to have results like this.

  5. Does Val D have idea what is going on?
Even a barely sentient person who can see patterns would recognize the fact that the key is to nominate women.

  6. I agree with Girl Power. The republicans missed the boat by not endorsing more female candidates. It’s a shame the committee people are nothing but puppets. The Courts will be filled with Democrats for a long time and I blame the lack of leadership in the GOP. It started with Gleason and now Digiorgio.

  7. NOTE TO GOP: WOMEN WIN JUDICIAL RACES! Val Digiorgio and his good ol’ boys network, along with the committee people, better wake up. I told them early in the endorsement process they needed women to run for the Superior Court because of who the Dems were running, yet they decided to endorse 3 older white men. They are good guys, but they had a big mountain to climb simply because they are men. Look at the makeup of the Court. Mary Murray wasn’t endorsed by the party, had little to no money, was not recommended by the bar, and is a District Judge! She is probably going to get a seat on the court simply because she is a woman. Look at the other judicial races too. Time to wake up GOP and end the favors for your politicians. Do some research and endorse highly electable people (women), not someone because of who they know or who is owed a favor.
