McVay Goes 2 for 2 on Newspaper Endorsements for Superior Court

Pittsburgh Judge Jack McVay has the support both of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in his run for Pa. Superior Court.

Both papers endorsed McVay, a former solicitor for state and county government, over Philadelphia municipal court Judge Joe Waters, a former police officer.

At present, it seems they are the only two newspapers poised to endorse in the race.

Wrote the Inquirer today:

It might be said the two Democrats have as much in common as a Philly cheesesteak and a Primanti Bros. sandwich. But like the expansive Primanti model – which stuffs fries and other fixin’s inside an overflowing roll – McVay offers his party’s voters the most legal acumen and judicial experience.

In recommending McVay, state Bar Association officials said he is regarded as having shown “outstanding legal ability” on Family Court, where he has overseen thousands of delinquency cases and child-welfare placements. The bar said he earned praise “for his diligence, excellent temperament, and willingness to employ unique solutions in matters that come before him.”

The Post-Gazette wrote earlier this week:

Before joining the court’s Family Division in 2007, Mr. McVay served as an assistant county solicitor, assistant city solicitor and counsel for the county housing authority. The bar association said Judge McVay “is regarded as having outstanding legal ability in his current position” and “is recognized for his diligence, excellent temperament and willingness to employ unique solutions.” Many of his cases involve child welfare, juvenile dependency and delinquency.

The judge is running so that his special knowledge of juvenile law may help Superior Court better interpret cases in this area. John T. McVay has earned the Post-Gazette endorsement

The Pa. Democratic Party has endorsed Waters.

The winner of the May 21 Democratic primary will face Republican attorney Vic Stabile of Cumberland County.

  1. McVay will win due to the relatively high turnout for the Pittsburgh races. There is nothing big to draw Philly voters out and much of the state has a bias against philly candidates in the court races.

  2. Great foresight by the papers following the
Westmoreland Co. Dems endorsement of McVay. Perhaps another “Kathleen Kane” scenario 🙂

How is it that Inky is biased against the Philly
    candidate?
