Meet Tom Wolf (With Video)

York County businessman gubernatorial hopeful Tom Wolf introduces himself to Democratic voters in a new web video.

Called “Turnaround,” the 3-minute clip tells the 3-minute story of how the candidate repurchased York-based Wolf Organization when it was on the brink of bankruptcy in 2009 and turned it around.

The video was sent to supporters in an e-mail addressed from Frances Wolf, his wife, late Thursday morning.

“Tom didn’t have to save the company, but he did it because hundreds of jobs, and the families and community they support, were at stake,” Mrs. Wolf wrote. “He could have walked away, turned his back. But he didn’t. Tom recognized that he had a responsibility to face, to keep his employees safe by keeping their jobs intact. It’s what keeps him working so hard every single day — and it’s why he’s running for governor.”

The video was produced by Iowa-based Groundswell Public Strategies.

It helps counteract critical whispering in Democratic circles about Wolf’s significant personal wealth. Wolf has pledged at least $10 million of his personal money to the campaign.

Wolf himself only speaks twice in the video but uses testimonials from his company employees, York residents, and his wife to tell his story.

“Sometimes when you talk about doing the right thing and making decisions, you also have to make some very tough choices,” Wolf says in the video. “Looking at Pennsylvania — traveling around it, understanding the history, all the things we have for us — we could be so much better than we are. I’d love to be in the same situation in Pennsylvania…than I was in my company.”

In a crowded Democratic field of better known candidates like Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz and state treasurer Rob McCord, Wolf will need to leverage his wealth to gain exposure. Wolf has served as the Pa. Revenue Secretary from 2007 to 2008.
