Mellow To Plead Guilty, Could Spend Five Years In Prison

Former state Sen. Robert J. Mellow will plead guilty to mail fraud and filing a false tax return.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division filed a federal information against Mr. Mellow, charging him with conspiring with others between 2006 and 2010 to commit mail fraud in connections with a scheme to defraud the Pennsylvania Senate and to file a false federal tax income return.

The federal information further alleges that as part of the scheme, Mr. Mellow caused and knowingly permitted, through willful blindness, the submission to the chief clerk of the senate of false job classification and re-classification forms and memos for senate staff who performed political fundraising and campaign work while being compensated by the Senate.
