Michael Meehan Elected Philadelphia GOP Chair

Michael MeehanMichael Meehan, the longtime Philadelphia GOP General Counsel, was elected as the new chairman of the Philadelphia GOP.  Former Chairman Joe DeFelice stepped down on Friday to join the Trump Administration.

“Whether you voted for me or not, I don’t care,” Meehan told the ward leaders after the election, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Meehan ran against current vice-chair of the city party Mike Cibik.  Meehan won 65-55 a system that gives more voting power to wards with a higher percentage of Republican voter registration.

The contentious election re-opened some divisions within the city party.

Cibik, who has 13 months left in his term as vice-chair says he will not be leaving his position.

“Mr. Meehan will have to work with me,” Cibik told the Inquirer.
