More Labor Groups Back Innamorato

It’s endorsement time in the labor world and Sara Innamorato seems to getting the lion’s share in her quest to become Allegheny County Executive.

The Democrat picked up two major endorsements from labor organizations last week including from the Allegheny-Fayette Central Labor Council, a local branch of the AFL-CIO that represents 100,000 workers in Pennsylvania including transportation and building trade workers.

“Our endorsement reflects the fact that Sara Innamorato is without a doubt the best candidate in the race for organized labor and all working families,” ACLC President Darrin Kelly said in a statement. “Our members will go all out to help Sara win this election in November, and we look forward to working with her to keep making life better for working families in Allegheny County.”

The ACLC had supported John Weinstein in the primary.

She picked up endorsements from the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, and from two local units of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

“I am proud to have the support of the working people of @AlleghenyLabor – the people who build, run, + care for our region. Unions build the middle class, give workers a voice on the job, + help ensure that our communities receive fair wages with good benefits for a day’s work,” she tweeted.

“As County Executive, I will continue to show up for workers across this county and bring organized labor to the table as we build an Allegheny County for all.”

Throughout her race, Ms. Innamorato has received significant support from the SEIU, one of Pennsylvania’s largest and most politically powerful unions. The SEIU represents healthcare and other service-sector workers.

Republican nominee for Allegheny County Executive Joe Rockey received the endorsement of three unions representing 3,500 members of law enforcement in Allegheny County back in late July.

“There is no question that people in Allegheny County feel less safe given the current level of crime and public disorder, particularly in Pittsburgh’s Downtown and South Side,” said Robert Swartzwelder, President of Fort Pitt FOP Lodge No. 1.

“Joe Rockey is the only candidate in the race who has been clear and unambiguous in his support for law enforcement and in having an actual plan for public safety in Allegheny County,” Matthew Feldmeier, endorsement chairman for FOP Lodge 91 said.

“As a candidate, I am grateful for their support. As a citizen of Allegheny County, I am grateful for their work to keep us safe. And as Allegheny County executive I am fully committed to supporting the men and women who do the hard work of keeping us secure on our streets and in our homes,” Rockey said.

The pair will face off in the November 7 election, but before that, they will debate on October 3. The debate will be televised live on WTAE-TV.
