Colby Itkowitz over at the Morning Call has a nice scoop this afternoon – Lehigh County Democratic Chairman Rick Daugherty will challenge Rep. Charlie Dent in 2012. From the story:
Whether or not Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan chooses to go another round with U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent in 2012 won’t impact Lehigh County Democratic Chairman Rick Daugherty’s decision.
Daugherty is running for the 15th District congressional seat either way, he told The Morning Call Monday.
In fact, Daugherty said, he expects to have a primary contest against Callahan, who is being heavily recruited by Washington Democrats to rerun next year against Republican Dent. Daugherty said he’s already told Callahan that he’s running. Dent defeated Callahan in 2010 by 15 points.
Daugherty, executive director of the Lehigh County Senior Center, said he felt compelled to run after the Republicans in the U.S. House, including Dent, supported a budget that would have changed Medicare.
