Morning Call/Muhlenberg College Poll: PA Voters Split on Impeaching, Removing Trump From Office

While Pennsylvania’s Congressional delegation was split and fell along party lines on supporting the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump in late September, new polling from Morning Call/Muhlenberg College shows that voters in the state are still rather divided on the impeachment effort.

Slightly over half, 51%, support the impeachment inquiry into Trump after his phone conversation with Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy requesting that they “investigate the family of former Vice President Joe Biden, and the Trump administration’s withholding of foreign aid to Ukraine.” 47% of registered voters polled said they opposed the impeachment inquiry into Trump.

Registered voters were even more divided when asked if they believe if Trump should be impeached and removed from office. 49% support impeaching and removing Trump from the presidency due to his actions, while 48% opposed it.

Just 2% said they weren’t sure if the impeachment probe is appropriate and 3% said they weren’t decided on whether Trump deserved to be removed from office.

This poll had a margin of error +/-6.0 percent.

Registered voters in the state, much like their Congressional delegation which had 9 Democrats support the impeachment inquiry and 9 Republicans oppose it, are divided among party lines.

80% of Democrats support impeaching and removing Trump from office, while 15% oppose, and 5% said they weren’t sure. 86% of Republicans oppose impeaching and removing Trump from office, with 14% supporting it and 1% not sure.

Independents are torn on the issue as well. 50% of registered independents said they support impeaching and removing Trump from office, while 45% oppose that and 5% are undecided.

Mirroring Trump’s approval ratings and hypothetical head to head matchups with the Democratic presidential frontrunners in the state, the region that supports impeachment the most is Philadelphia with 89% supporting the effort there, while northeast Pennsylvania opposes the effort with only 23% supporting Trump being impeached and removed from office. The Philadelphia suburbs, which included Lehigh and Northampton counties in this poll, show close to 6 in 10 voters supporting impeachment.

This latest poll also shows Trump’s approval rating remaining under water in Pennsylvania, although it hasn’t budged much since being sworn-into office. 40% approve of Trump’s job performance, while 56% disapprove with the numbers slightly increasing in favorability with 43% viewing Trump favorably and 54% unfavorable.

  1. This poll does NOT take into consideration the revelations of the past few days about direct witnesses to Trump asking about investigations, Sondland’s comments about Trump’s priorities, and new emails between Sondland and top Trump officials discussing the investigations.

More smoking guns than a John Wick movie.
