Murphy Announces He Will Not Run For Re-Election Amidst Affair Scandal

Tim MurphyCongressman Tim Murphy announced he will not be running for re-election next year amid a scandal involving an extra-marital affair, accusations he pushed for an abortion, and claims of a hostile work environment.

“After discussions with my family and staff, I have come to the decision that I will not seek re-election to Congress at the end of my current term,” Murphy said in a statement.

It was recently revealed that Murphy had asked the woman he had an affair with to consider an abortion during a pregnancy scare.  A memo was also released detailing what his chief of staff described as Murphy’s “hostile, erratic, unstable, angry, aggressive and abusive behavior” in the office.

The resignation creates another open seat in Pennsylvania, leading Republicans to eye a run.

Rumors are that state Senator Guy Reschenthaler (R-Allegheny) has been in contact with elected officials in the district asking for their support.  State Senator Kim Ward (R-Allegheny), Allegheny County Councilman Sam DeMarco, and County Party chairman D. Raja are rumored to be eyeing the seat as well.

Democrats Pam Iovino and Mike Crossey have already entered the race.

Below is Murphy’s complete statement.

After discussions with my family and staff, I have come to the decision that I will not seek reelection to Congress at the end of my current term.

I plan to spend my remaining months in office continuing my work as the national leader on mental health care reform, as well as issues affecting working families in southwestern Pennsylvania.

We have accomplished much in the past year through the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act and there is much work yet to be done.

In the coming weeks I will take personal time to seek help as my family and I continue to work through our personal difficulties and seek healing. I ask you to respect our privacy during this time.

  1. i think for Tom Corbett should succeed Tim Murphy in congress because for he will clean up Washington, D.C. very easily, and have him move to the District.

    1. That way for the US House of Representatives can have 3 Former Governors there and they are 1. Former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford Republican, 2. Former Florida Governor Charlie Crist Democrat and a Former Republican himself, 3. Former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett Republican is to replace Tim Murphy in 2018.

  2. Murphy will be replaced by another white straight male just like the GOP likes. Murphy will be replaced by another white straight male who professes to be a devout Christian and loves God while all along using that as a cover for wanting to ban a woman’s right to bodily autonomy.

  3. Where is the Mike Regan resolution criticizing this creep’s lying words and actions that are offensive to all of our American morals and values???? Come on mike – you couldn’t wait a day to ignorantly go after the football player’s expressions – so look in the mirror or closet and find your guts and introduce a resolution to condemn the pattern and repeated of lying of this creep that is offensive and unbecoming of a U.S. congressman AND human being. Regan is too chicken.

  4. The best hypocrite to replace the departing hypocrite would be the dumb mean hoopie Fitzgerald, the Allegheny County exec. If scheming, lying and double crossing his constituecy are the expected values of the office then phony Fitz wins in a walk

  5. Not good enough, he needed to resign yesterday. Why should he get another year and a half of salary and benefits off the backs of the taxpayers?

  6. Tim Murphy has had long political career in both the PA Senate and the US House of Representatives. He is going to grab two govt.pensions. It is about time he gives someone else a chance at public office. It is a shame about the circumstances that caused his downfall but he brought upon himself..
But thankfully the voters in his district are not fools and probably would not have stood for his moral shortcomings. If he had been lucky enough to get through a Republican Primary he surely would have been beaten in the general election by the Democratic Party candidate.
In my part of the state (Philadelphia County) Democrats with felony charges pending are regularly renominated and reelected. A Democratic elected official’s marital infidelity or any other character issues such as regularly stiffing creditors would be no hindrance to holding public office.

        1. Neither did it stop John Street or Michael Nutter from being elected Mayor of Philadelphia. My own state legislator, the unlamented Tony Payton’s house was up for sheriff’s sale when he first ran and was elected to the State House. He would probably still be in the State House if no one ever challenged his nomination petitions in his 3rd term which were loaded with fake signatures.

  7. that’s great news but i have 6 potential Repubicans and 2 potential democrats and i might support from and they are 1. Democrat Ex State Senator Matt Smith and 2. 2012 Nominee Larry Miggi. Republicans 1. Former State Representative Gordon Delinger, 2. 2012 Primary opponent Evan Feinberg, 3. 2012 State Treasuer Nominee Diana Irey-Vaughan, 4. State Representative Jim Christiana, 5. Potential Candidate Former Governor Tom Corbett, 6. State Senator Guy Rensenthaler. if Tom Corbett runs for congress i’m hoping and for he will be a great favorite for the republicans is to hold the district in 2018 like a comeback bid for him in politics.

    1. For Tom Corbett will also be the 3rd former Governor is to be in the US House of Representatives in 2018.

        1. Don’t legally have to live in a district to run for Congress there. It just looks bad.

  8. Let those who never sinned cast the first stone. You people make me sick..bet you sin every day. This can happen to anyone!.. I personally am praying for him and his family to heal from this hurt.

    1. Are you really saying that cheating on your spouse and asking your mistress to have an abortion is something that could happen to any of us? Tell us honestly if you would be saying the same thing if Tim Murphy was a Democrat (or is that something that is truly unforgivable?)

    2. Agree with you, Sandy. No one is perfect and DC is a “ripe” place to get into any kind of trouble. Pray that his family recovers.
If a Dem was guilty of Murphy’s “sins” they would all say, “So what?” Look at Clinton.

      1. “His” affair was “with” someone who lived “in or around his district” not in “DC” and not “only that” he “admitted to” having at least one other “affair.” This is just “another” case of a Republican “lawmaker” trying to impose their “belief system” on other people while not even following “it” in their “own lives.” Tim Murphy isn’t the “only” hypocrite “out there,” he’s just the most recent to “get caught.”

        1. The assumption that Dems can get away with this behavior is ludicrous. Who says that Bill didn’t loose some luster, the taint will always be there. Murphy is just another politician who won’t be laughing on the way to the bank.

    3. So, by that same logic, someone who has a mistress and asks her to get an abortion shouldn’t run around thumping the bible and railing against abortion (ie. throwing stones), right?
