Murphy Confirmed as Army Undersecretary

Patrick-MurphyFormer Congressman Patrick Murphy is headed to the Pentagon.

The Iraq and Afghanistan War veteran was confirmed as the Undersecretary of the Army on Friday. The Senate approved his nomination by voice vote.

Murphy represented PA-8 from 2007 to 2011 and was one of the first members of Congress to support Barack Obama’s campaign back in August 2007. His biggest accomplishment was overseeing the repeal of “Don’t ask, don’t tell” in 2010.

“Today, the Army and the nation are lucky to have former Rep. Patrick Murphy confirmed as undersecretary of the U.S. Army,” responded Neera Tanden, President of the progressive think tank Center for American Progress. “When he was a member of Congress, CAP was proud to work with Rep. Murphy on issues he championed, such as the Affordable Care Act, and as he led the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. As a Senior Fellow, Murphy contributed greatly to our work by leading on issues that affect 21st-century fighters, and he will no doubt do the same for the Army. Murphy served the country twice, first in the Army and later as the first Iraq War veteran to serve in Congress, and we know he will bring the same service to the Army once again.”

After serving in Congress, Murphy worked for the law firm Fox Rothschild and hosted a weekly MSNBC program. In 2012, he ran for the Democratic nomination for Attorney General against Kathleen Kane.

  1. A great choice for the
Army and the nation. He was a great US Comgressman from Bucks County, the second best on we ever had.

  2. I have known Patrick since he was a Captain in the Army and I met him at a charity event where he was working to help veterans and their families.

He distinguished job as a Congressman and since then he has displayed in word and deed a great interest in serving veterans. He more than most others was constantly aware of the needs of the volunteer military for the services promised to them and which often remain undelivered. Thus, there is a great number of reasons for supporting him in this position.

He has served with distinction in the mIlitary, served in combat zones and done his work as a soldier, teacher at West Point, Congressman and a promoter of veteran’s issues. It is time for us to ignore the political banter of those who didn’t experience the new type of warfare that we are gong to see in the coming years. Patrick is a perfect fit for this job and we should be proud to support one who is from the working class and has dedicated his life to public service.

  3. Murphy is a light weight – he was among first to support Obama and ignored his constiuents on many key votes to support Obama- not our Nation. Murphy does not deserve any elected office- he can’t be trusted and he is a light weight- there are plenty of better qualified veterans. Glad Fitzpatrick came back and beat this guy!

  4. He would not have made a great Attorney General because he had even less experience than our train wreck Kathleen Kane. David Freed was obviously the best choice for that office.

  5. He would have made a great Attorney General. Best of luck to Congressman Murphy in this new role!

  6. He is a good man. Hopefully Pennsylvania has not heard the last of Patrick Murphy in an elected position. He just ran for the wrong job in 2012. AG is an elective office requiring a very specific skill set that Patrick simply did not have.
