Murphy Honored for Helping to Keep America’s Factories Humming

National Assoc. of Manufacturers Recognizes Murphy’s Work

(Pittsburgh, PA) – The National Association of Manufacturers today named Congressman Tim Murphy (PA-18) a recipient of the “NAM Award for Manufacturing Legislative Excellence” for working to create U.S. manufacturing jobs. The award is presented to legislators who support a pro-growth, pro-jobs agenda and “advance the effort to maintain U.S. leadership in the global economy.”

“Without action, America stands to lose good-paying middle class jobs, and a key component of our economy. We must get back to ‘making things’ again, and that means fighting to save our manufacturing base from those who refuse to engage in a fair competition,” said Rep. Murphy. “With its dedicated workforce and demonstrated ingenuity, American manufacturing has the chance to not just repair our economy, not just lead us out of debt and deficit, but create hundreds of thousands of new, well-paying, high-quality jobs.”

As Congress has tried boosting domestic growth with trillions in new government spending, Rep. Murphy has focused on delivering what American manufacturers have asked for — a fair shake in the global marketplace. For the first time in a century, China will overtake the U.S. as the world’s largest manufacturing economy next year.

“The Chinese are succeeding not because they are more innovative or efficient, but because Beijing engages in unfair and illegal trade practices that undermine the American worker,” said Rep. Murphy.

Last week, the House of Representatives passed by an overwhelming margin, 348-79, the signature agenda item for American manufacturers —the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act, which was co-authored by Rep. Murphy. American manufacturers have lost more than 2.4 million jobs in the last decade to China because Beijing illegally manipulates its currency in order to subsidize Chinese exports.

The Murphy-Ryan currency bill empowers American manufacturers and workers to seek remedies under current trade laws when injured by a foreign country’s currency manipulation. Rep. Murphy assiduously worked to build bipartisan support for the bill, navigate the bill through the House Ways and Means Committee, and produce a floor vote on the measure. He is now working to secure passage by the Senate.

Manufacturers have asked Congress to stop the excessive regulation and taxation that are putting U.S. businesses at a competitive disadvantage. Rep. Murphy is a supporter of a national manufacturing strategy that will comprehensively address trade, tax, innovation, and environmental policy. The strategy, laid out by business owners, will be a blueprint to rebuild America’s declining manufacturing base, which is vital to national security and the middle class.

Congressman Murphy has also led Congressional efforts to enact “Buy American” provisions focused on making sure U.S. tax dollars intended to create American jobs benefit domestic companies.
