Congressman Tim Murphy (R-Allegheny) submitted a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan officially resigning from Congress effective October 21st.
“This afternoon I received a letter of resignation from Congressman Tim Murphy, effective October 2. It was Dr. Murphy’s decision to move on to the next chapter of his life, and I support it,” Ryan said in a statement reported on by Politico.
The resignation sets up a special election in the 18th district to finish out the term. Governor Tom Wolf will set the date for the special election.
Murphy announced yesterday he would not be running for re-election next year.
NRCC Chairman Steve Stivers said he was disappointed in the circumstances of the resignation, but said the NRCC will win the special election.
“As I said last night, the circumstances surrounding this situation are extremely disappointing to me. However, the NRCC is undefeated in special elections this year and I’m supremely confident that will continue. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing how national Democrats can spin yet another special election loss into a so-called ‘moral victory,'” Stivers said.
Update: The DCCC also went on the offensive about the special election that will be held.
“While the circumstances surrounding Representative Murphy’s resignation are uniquely disturbing and hypocritical, he will certainly not be the last House Republican to have an involuntary and embarrassing end to their career this election cycle. Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District is a reliable Republican stronghold, but the grassroots energy behind Democrats has proven powerful this year, and we will be closely tracking this district and special election,” DCCC Communications Director Meredith Kelly said in a statement.

when will former governor tom corbett is going to announce a run for congress in 2018.
i mean’t for the special election and the general election in 2018.
I think for Former Governor Tom Corbett and Larry Miggi a Washington County Commissioner are the most likely Republican and Democratic Nominees is to run for congress in Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District in the 2018 special and general elections.
Corbett was a disgrace as governor and should never even think about running for another seat anywhere.
maybe for he won’t be disgrace in congress is to replace Tim Murphy in 2018.
The GOP aborted Murphy in the first trimester of the scandal
Adios Amigo, at least he had the good sense to resign unlike Congressmen here in Philadelphia who usually have to go through the entire investigation, indictment and conviction process before they quit. This is probably because they want to milk the taxpayers for every last paycheck before having to pack it in.
Rick Saccone, although running for U.S. Senate, is a man of the people, a firm believer in conservative values, and a strong candidate to restore the integrity of PA-18’s office. I hope he runs for Congress instead of Senate.
Good choice Tim Murphy maybe i’m hoping for Former Governor Tom Corbett might run for your seat in the special election in 2018. if he does i’m hoping and he will join Mark Sanford and Charlie Crist 2 Former Governors themselves in the US House of Representatives in 2018.
And all 3 of them were terrible governors!
No, not all. Charlie Crist was decent in Florida.
Corbett was a puke as Guv.
Senator Guy Reschenthaler who is running for this open seat has now run for 3 different Positions in the last 5 years. He was a Magistrate for a year or two then he didn’t like that, So he bought his way into the State Senate Seat. Then once again he doesn’t like it, So now the little rich boy is trying to bully his way into the Congress seat.
Hopefully the voters will see that and cast this Frank Underwood wannabe to the curb
Democrats should be careful about use of word hypocrasy. Does the name Weiner ring a bell? How about Bill and Monica?
How about “anti-abortion Christian” fornicate, commits adultery, then begs his hi to abort his child?
At least Weiner,Bill, and Monica can spell…
People who vote for a candidate because she is a woman (or because she is not a woman) are political dolts. Get the best person, period.
Pam is a wonderful leader. She has the knowledge, confidence, and backbone to bring ethical representation back to the people! Maybe you should take a page from her book before you start name calling.
Pam is great! And exactly the type of Democrat that can win this district. She is pro 2nd Amendment, and generally a very moderate politician. I think this would be a wise choice.
GOP will probably run that Steeler wide receiver who throws Gatorade tub on the sidelines during games, so they can maintain the decorum of Congress.
Pam would be a great choice and a hell of a rep!
I think there is a time limit to how far out this seat can remain vacant. So the Governor may have to call it sooner than May of next year.
Dem leadership considering Pam Snyder! It is time for a democratic woman to represent our community in Washington!
Pro Tip: bragging about your record winning special elections is like bragging about the size of your penis – don’t do it. It fuels the perception of impropriety if and when the special ends up being scheduled at an odd time, which is typically disadvantageous for Democrats.
Well, since Wolf is free to pick the date, I can’t see how he would pick a date to disadvantage Democrats. I’m sure he’ll go with the Spring primary 2018 when some Democrats might actually show up.
That depends on if a law says it has to be within a timeframe. It’s 7 months out from the primary.
