Murphy wins another term in 113th

Democratic incumbent Kevin Murphy is declaring victory over his Republican challenger, Mike LaPolla, in the race for state House District 113. With all precincts reporting, Mr. Murphy had 66.1 percent of the vote while Mr. LaPolla had 33.9 percent, according to unofficial returns.

“I’m grateful and thankful to the constituents of the 113th District for trusting me to represent them for another two years. It’s humbling and a responsibility I take seriously,” Mr. Murphy said at a victory party at Murphy’s Pub in Scranton.

Mr. LaPolla, of Scranton, congratulated Mr. Murphy for his victory.

Describing himself as happy about the victory, Mr. Murphy, of Scranton, said many of the services that constituents receive through his office are because of the office staff.

While in office, Mr. Murphy said, he believes he raised the standard for accountability and transparency.

Before being elected to his first term in the House in 2008, Mr. Murphy worked as an auditor for the state. He also served on Scranton City Council for four years.

House District 113 has 40,780 registered voters, with 27,535 Democrats, 10,250 Republicans and 2,995 independents.

The district encompasses all of Clarks Green, South Abington Twp. and Throop; part of Moosic; most of the Green Ridge section of Scranton; all of North Scranton, the Minooka section and West Scranton; a part of the East Mountain section of Scranton and a portion of Taylor. The job pays $78,314 annually.
