National Enviro Leaders Back McGinty

Katie McGinty

Several national environmentalist leaders backed former DEP Secretary Katie McGinty for Governor Thursday, including former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson.

We’ve worked with Katie throughout the years. And now we are determined to do all we can to elect her governor. Pennsylvania is critical to the national environmental agenda,” they wrote in a jointly signed letter.

“And, there is no candidate with better environmental credentials than Katie McGinty to lead that agenda and move Pennsylvania forward to a sustainable future.”

Prior to her tenure in Gov. Ed Rendell’s cabinet from 2003 to 2008, McGinty chaired the White House Council on Environmental Quality under President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1998. She previously worked as an aide to Al Gore.

Last week Clinton said an EPA building to be named for him could just as well be named for McGinty or a few others in his administration.

In addition to Richardson, signatories include Carol Browner, Administrator, U.S. EPA, 1993-2001; George T. Frampton, Jr., former Chairman, White House Council on Environmental Quality; Kathryn S. Fuller, former President and CEO of the World Wildlife Foundation; Winsome McIntosh, Chairman, Defenders of Wildlife; Carl Pope, former Executive Director of the Sierra Club; Larry Rockefeller, President, American Conservation Association; and others.

McGinty, of Chester County, faces a crowded Democratic primary including Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz and state Treasurer Rob McCord.

Even her strong resume on environmental matters isn’t enough to win the distinction of the sole environmentalist candidate.

John Hanger succeeded McGinty as Pa.’s Secretary of the DEP from 2008 to 2011. He was also the founding President of PennFuture, one of the state’s leading environmental advocacy groups.

“Katie has a fine environmental record and has earned these endorsements from these environmental leaders from outside Pennsylvania,” Hanger said. “We’re competing first for Pennsylvania Democratic primary voters and it’s our challenge to let those voters know exactly where we stand and what we’ll do if elected. I’ve laid out specific plans on Growing Greener 3, gas drilling regulation, renewable energy and climate change. My environmental record on renewable energy, energy efficiency, climate and gas drilling is unmatched.”

  1. “McGinty, of Chester County,”
this statement may be in error…I think Katie McGinty lives in Radnor Township, which is Delaware County and not Chester County.
