Newcomer Republican Files to Challenge Cartwright

It’s still about a year before the 2014 primaries, but some statewide candidates are getting out in front. Last week, Matthew Dietz, from Wind Gap, filed with the FEC to run as a Republican in the 17th congressional district in northeast PA.

Matt-CartwrightThe 17th District is currently represented in Washington by Democrat Matt Cartwright and was redrawn in 2011 to make it a safe Democratic seat. Cartwright defeated Republican Laureen Cummings 60-40 in 2012.

Dietz is a newcomer to such a big political stage. Meeting minutes show that he was appointed to spot on Wind Gap’s Park Board in 2011 but no other record exists of his public service.

Dietz works at LR Services in Allentown, which provides chartered flights and aircraft management. He could not be reached for comment because he is at flight school for the rest of the week.

If Dietz wants to win, he’ll have a an even bigger viability problem than his party registration. A Twitter account that seems to belong to Dietz shows the candidate repeatedly cheering on the Cowboys, for example tweeting at wide receiver Dez Bryant telling him to “Torch the Eagles secondary today” back in 2011.

If this is actually his account, he’ll have some explaining to do to fans of the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants, the favorite top two NFL teams in the region.

Who cares wich team he likes? As long as he sticks his values and those that elect him unlike the the people there now!
