One Response
Scott Wagner’s debacle of a candidacy is yet another instance of the reminder of the need for campaign finance reform. Public funding of candidates would help increase quality candidates who may not have access to large sums of money but who are worthy of office. Wagner’s candidacy proves that having financial resources is not necessarily the answer to a winning campaign. Having political skills and competence is also important too. The US Supreme Court has not been as supportive of the more stringent campaign finance laws. Blaming a campaign manager or party chairperson for a failed campaign is missing the point because if there is a less than optimal candidate who has access to large resources there is not much lesser financed candidates can do and generally they lose to the well financed person. There can be good well financed candidates but that cannot always be counted on. Public financing of campaigns is a positive step.
