Obama Ad Criticizes GOP Medicare Plan (Watch Video)

The War on Medicare continues.

After Pennsylvania Democrats’ press call on Monday to criticize the Romney-Ryan budget, featuring PA seniors, the latest comes from a Team Obama attack ad.

The spot, released Wednesday, hits on the Romney-Ryan Medicare voucher plan, alleging that the plan will result in a massive increase in prescription costs for seniors.

A new Obama ad says a Romney-Ryan presidency would "end Medicare as we know it."

The video, made up of several newscasts covering the Medicare battles, claims that the Paul Ryan Medicare plan “will end Medicare as we know it.”

“The cuts in Medicare that he’s proposing, the replacement of Medicare by the voucher system, would in the end mean that tens of millions of older Americans would not be able to afford essential health care,” said Paul Krugman, a well-known liberal economist at Princeton University.

“Independent analysts say that limited vouchers would mean that seniors would have to pay thousands more of out their own pocket,” the narrator laments.

The video also confronts “lies” from Mitt Romney about Obama’s own Medicare record:

“He [President Obama] has taken $716 billion out of the Medicare trust fund to pay for Obama Care. I’ll  put it back.“

State Romney spokesperson Kate Meriwether echoed this statement, saying that the Medicare cut is being championed by the Obama administration as an achievement.

“There’s only one candidate in this race who has cut Medicare for today’s seniors by hundreds of billions of dollars, and that’s President Obama. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have a bipartisan plan to strengthen Medicare and are committed to ensuring that Medicare remains strong – not just for today’s seniors, but for tomorrow’s seniors as well.”

The Obama video calls this claim “bogus” and emphasized that benefits to seniors “actually increased under Obamacare.”

Neither the Romney attacks mentioned in the ad nor the attacks Team Obama is using are accurate.

According to FactCheck.org, the Medicare cuts – which are to be implemented over the course of 10 years – are not specific program cuts as much as a reduction in the growth of the program. Factcheck.org also emphasised that the plan Democrats have been attacking is out of date and has been replaced.

It is time for you Mr. Rothfus to be truthful about your support of the Ryan voucher plan!!!
