October Jobs Report: Unemployment Rate Falls to 5.1%

Unemployment-300x225The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry’s latest report illustrates a two-tenths of percentage point decrease in Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate, at 5.1% in October.

Although an improvement, this is still one-tenth of a percentage point above the U.S. rate of 5.0%.

Good News

Over the past year, Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate has declined a total of one-tenth of a percent, from 5.2% in October of 2014, which the national rate showed a much more substantial decrease of seven-tenths, from 5.7% to 5.0%.

Current labor force statistics show the areas with the greatest gains in October were education & health services as well as leisure & hospitality.

Other areas that improved greatly were nonfarm jobs, that increased by 13,700, as well as private sector jobs, which were up 14,200.

Seven of the 11 super-sectors added jobs over the past year, and total nonfarm jobs were up 0.8%.

Bad News

Government jobs declined, however. The biggest drop in October overall was due to construction.

  1. Ironic, unemployment declines and, yet, fewer people are working and those who are working are working for less.

The labor participation rate is not referenced in this article.

Omitting material facts misrepresents the situation.

  2. Unemployment drops DURING the holiday shopping season, which doesn’t start until the end of Novmeber, not in October.

  3. Unemployment rate means pretty much nuthin’ check out the food stamp program for the real situation

  4. Has nothing to do with Wolf or Obama. Unemployment always drops before the holiday shopping season with people going back for temporary work. Nothing to see here, move along.
