Democratic gubernatorial front-runner Dan Onorato raised more than $8 million by the end of 2009, his campaign said Monday, by far the largest amount of money from either party’s candidates.

The campaign press release did not say how much cash it has on hand. It said it will release its full financial disclosure report on the filing deadline, Feb. 1, although it added some of the money was left over from Onorato’s 2007 re-election as Allegheny County chief executive.

Other Democratic candidates haven’t raised nearly as much, although businessman Tom Knox’s personal fortune gives him the same kind of resources at his disposal. Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel, considered one of Onorato’s chief rivals, announced he had raised just $400,000 by the end of the year. Hoeffel did not have the advantage of campaigning all year, however, unlike Onorato.

The Allegheny County Chief Executive also said Monday he will unveil his economic development plan in Norristown. The release will likely be closely watched because it will provide key details on the undoubted No. 1 issue for this year’s campaign, the economy.
