There’s a one-in-a-million chance that a Republican could win the deep blue 13th district of Pennsylvania. Nevertheless, Dee Adcock looked at that reality and must have thought “So you’re telling me there’s a chance.”
Adcock told Philly.com’s John Featherman that he will be jumping into the race, making him the first, and likely only, Republican candidate to announce. Adcock is a businessman in the swimming pool distribution industry and was the 2010 GOP nominee in PA-13.
Four years ago, Adcock compiled an impressive 44% of the vote against incumbent Allyson Schwartz, giving her the lowest margin of victory of her tenure. Unfortunately for Adcock, however, there are indications that 2010 may have been the Republican’s high-water mark in PA-13.
That year, of course, Republicans took over control of the House in what President Obama famously dubbed a “shellacking.” Nationwide, the Republicans picked up 63 seats, the party’s largest increase since 1938. The 13th district was also one of the few seats in Pennsylvania to become more Democratic in redistricting, moving from a Cook Political Index number of D+12 to D+13.
Moreover, in 2012, Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney 66%-33% in PA-13 and Allyson Schwartz was re-elected by a 38-point margin. Overall, 59.7% of the district’s voters are registered Democrats while only 28.6% are Republican. Nevertheless, Dee Adcock intends to fight on.
“Battles that are never fought are never won. If we don’t fight the battle, we won’t win the war,” Adcock told Featherman.
Democratic candidates in PA-13 include physician/activist Val Arkoosh, State Rep. Brendan Boyle, State Senator Daylin Leach, and former Congresswoman Marjorie Margolies.
