PA-2: Sims Will Still Run for Re-Election in State House District

brian-simsThis should be interesting.

Brian Sims is challenging indicted Congressman Chaka Fattah in 2016 and running for reelection in his State House seat.

Yesterday, though, Anna Orso of Billy Penn reported that Ben Waxman is taking a close look at Sims’ seat. Waxman is a top aide of State Senator Vincent Hughes and he used to serve as field director for Pennsylvania Voice.

While Waxman didn’t confirm the report, Billy Penn pointed out he registered the domain name votewaxman.com back in August.

A few hours later, Billy Penn ran a separate piece in which Orso interviewed Sims. When asked if he was going to run in both primaries, the State Rep responded that he would.

“I’m certainly going to run for re-election,” Sims stated. “I’m committed to either being back in the state House or hopefully in Congress. I’m going to run for both.”

It’s unclear whether Waxman would consider a primary challenge against Sims. Of course, it is possible that if Sims wins the race with Fattah he would step aside and allow Waxman to replace him.

The 2nd Congressional district and 182nd legislative district are both heavily Democratic and located solely, or mostly, in Philadelphia. They overlap in Rittenhouse Square.

  2. so the politicians are running. what a surprise . an ex cop. a politicians crew member. i can only see one newcomer, marni snyder.

  3. Brian Sims would be better suited to lobbying for the Human Rights Campaign. He should not hold public office.

  4. Waxman = Pennsylvania Voice. Now there’s a pile of “nonpartisan” corruption if I every saw one.

  5. PhillyDem – wrong thread since this concerns the fate of Sims’ state house seat, but keep an eye on Dwight Evans for CD-2 if Fattah starts to really go down in flames.

  6. We don’t need to worry folks. He ain’t going to win. Even if Chaka has been indicted – three white candidates will split about us and Fattah cruise to victory.

And really, shouldn’t we have an African-American representative? Fattah should not run and a viable African-American should run in the race.

  7. Mike Panza-

That’s what primaries are for. Nothing to stop someone from challenging Sims. It’s a plum opportunity.

There would likely be some voter confusion with Sims being on the ballot twice, enabling a challenger to convince some people they could only vote for Sims once. I would expect his congressional opponents to try the same stunt. 🙂

  8. I’m disappointed to read this. If he runs for both, and wins the primary for both, the voters won’t get a say in who replaces him for the State House seat (similar to what played out with Brendan Boyle).

I have always liked, admired, and supported Brian Sims in the past. If he runs for both offices next year, I won’t be supporting him any longer.

  9. Waaa waaa you can come at his lack of experience and track record in Harrisburg, but don’t you dare besmirch the looks on that big sexy bear.

  10. PhillyPolitico-

I understand that. My point was why assume that Waxman had any particular advantage, or that the party nomination would be as effective in that district?

I’d be shocked if the progressive activists didn’t try to run a gay candidate in defiance of a party pick or maybe a candidate who is part of Bernie Sanders movement or environmental crowd.

I don’t think the party would be as effective controlling the outcome.

  11. Lyman:

Stack didn’t run for Senate and Lt. Governor at the same time. The 5th District is up with the Presidential elections–2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, etc. The Lt. Governor race was in 2014. Different elections. He ran for LG *as* Senator, but that’s very common.

Boyle however did run for both seats at the same time, and then kicked his state house seat to a Republican in the ensuing special election.

  12. > How can Sims “allow Waxman to replace him”?

    David:

It happens all the time in Philly. Sims could resign, and the party would get to nominate a candidate for the special election. It’ll be overwhelmingly likely that that candidate would win, since Philly is overwhelmingly Democratic, especially the 182nd. Presumably that candidate could be Waxman.

  13. So, if Sims wins, the taxpayers have to foot the bill for a special election.
How can Sims “allow Waxman to replace him”?

It’s a safe Dem seat, so it’s not a risk for the party. The party will try to install it’s own pick, but it’s going to be heavily contested special election.

Maybe someone will step up and challenge Sims with a primary, win, and avoid the special election.

  14. How is this interesting? This is common practice. Stack, ran for the senate and lt. guv. Brendan boyle ran for congress and his state seat, won both, and went then the house seat went to a special. There’s nothing unique about this.

  15. Nice of you to keep your word about only serving two terms in the legislature, Brian. Oh yes, you’re such a new, ethical breed of politician.
