PA-6 Candidates Stay on Track for Competitive Race

Trivedi, left, and Gerlach

“No bones about it. This race is now as competitive as they come,” said Daren Berringer, Senior Advisor to Dem congressional challenger Manan Trivedi.

Second quarter fundraising numbers indicate that the race between Trivedi and Republican incumbent Jim Gerlach will remain competitive. The Congressman raised a healthy $341,000, to Trivedi’s $260,000.

Additionally, though Gerlach’s reported cash-on-hand figure ($885K) trumps Trivedi’s by more than $300K, Trivedi has more COH ($527K) than any other Democratic challenger in PA.

“Manan’s financial support comes from a wide-swath of individuals; 2,516 to be exact, whereas Congressman Gerlach continues to load up his bank account with every bit of Washington insider money he can get his hands on,” said Berringer.

Indeed, $198K, about 58 percent of Gerlach’s Q2 fundraising came from PACs. Trivedi, a primary care physician who presently works at the Reading and Pottstown hospitals on an intermittent basis, received about a third percent of his Q2 funds via PACs.

Trivedi received about $43K via online donations, doubtless a result of his popularity among the national progressive community.

But as Gerlach Senior Adviser Vince Galko notes, he’s trailing his Q2 2010 total when he raised $357K. That year, Trivedi lost to Gerlach by 14 points in a district with lines that were more favorable to the Democrat (though in a year that was more favorable to the Republican).

“Our opponent is almost $100,000 behind his fundraising total from two years ago and he remains virtually unknown in the district,” Vince Galko, the Senior Advisor for Gerlach said.

Trivedi faced a competitive primary with Doug Pike and won by the closest margin of any congressional candidate in PA in 2010; he won by 700 votes out of 42,000 cast. His COH at the end of Q2 2010 was lower, just $329K. Likewise, Gerlach raised more in Q2 2010 ($431K) and finished with lower COH ($541K) than in 2012.

“We are very pleased with the Gerlach for Congress fundraising efforts for the quarter. In addition, just last week Congressman Gerlach had one of his most successful fundraising events ever and that was not part of these numbers,” Galko said, referring to an event last week with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-MN).

“We feel good heading into the fall election, however, Jim Gerlach will continue to work as hard as ever to earn the support of his constituents.”

  2. Go Manan, keep fighting the good fight. Too bad I was gerrymandered out of your district. You would make a great congressman.

  3. This district is a sprawling gerrymandered monstrosity – and clearly made that way to favor rebublicans. More evidence that in America today, your vote really doesn’t matter.

  4. Who picks your headlines? This race is over… Trivedi is going to get walloped.
