After a 24-24 vote in the State Senate, Lt. Gov. Mike Stack cast his tiebreaker vote to kill a bill that proposed the elimination of school property taxes statewide.
The bill would have axed more than $14 billion in school property taxes while raising state sales and income taxes to balance the budget, but had lukewarm support from both sides of the aisle.
An opportunity for the bill to be reintroduced remains as co-sponsor Sen. Wayne Fontana missed the vote, while Guy Reschenthaler will be sworn in Tuesday, giving Republicans a 31-19 majority in the state’s upper chamber.
On Monday, Gov. Tom Wolf told the PA Press Club he opposes the bill and called it a distraction. Wolf bemoaned the lack of GOP leadership after coming up short on votes for an agreement they made two weeks ago to end the 21-week stalemate.
“To a certain extent, our prolonged budget debate is a natural function of a divided government,” Wolf said. “No one can get everything she or he wants in such a government. Compromise is of the essence and many have tried to do just that – compromise.”
With Thanksgiving now just two days away, it seems hopes of a deal by Thanksgiving are set to be dashed.

Hi, I googled bngiener camera classes Billings, MT and your previous class showed up. So I am emailing to inquire about if you might have another class coming up or if you are up for some private hire/tutoring!??!I’m desperate! I think I love photography, but as soon as I try and take a photo I get incredibly discouraged and walk away pouting. I don’t want to be the girl that forever uses her fancy DSLR camera in auto mode. I’d love any help! Thanks so much. Happy Holidays!-Sarah Barkie
Terry M, my thoughts as well, smoke and mirrors.
Or, Blurred, leadership knew exactly how they wanted this vote to turn out.
I’m not sure where Reschenthaler stood on the issue, but good leadership would’ve certainly held out until the co-sponsor was back to vote? Unless it was a vote to save face? Typical
These people have no ability to lead.
Well, it looks like the Senate has plenty of turkeys for Thanksgiving.
