Pa. Delegation’s Abortion Opponents Speak at March for Life

Rothfus waves to rally-goers

Washington — With 13 congressmen and two Senators, the number of members of Pennsylvania’s delegation who oppose abortion is the largest it’s been in years. Several of them spoke to rally-goers at the annual March for Life in DC on Friday.

There’s not an official crowd estimate, but organizers say between 500,000 and 650,000 people marched on the National Mall. The annual protest commemorates the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, 40 years old this year.

Reps. Glenn Thompson (R-Centre) and Keith Rothfus (R-Allegheny) joined fellow legislators to welcome the protesters to Washington and to call for measures to provide alternatives to abortion nationwide.

Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Butler) did not appear on stage at the rally but did express support in a press release issued by his office.

“The most fundamental of all human rights is the right to life, and today hundreds of thousands of Americans traveled to Washington, D.C. to affirm that right for all Americans, born and unborn. Among the marchers today were hundreds of residents from the Third District of Pennsylvania, who braved the frigid temperatures to be a voice for the most vulnerable in our society: the unborn. I am immensely humbled by their great affirmation of and commitment to life, and as their representative in Washington, I will continue to stand alongside them in their fight to defend life.”

After the march Pennsylvania residents were invited to a reception hosted by members of the Pennsylvania congressional delegation where Senator Pat Toomey spoke. Senator Bob Casey, Jr. later met with rally-going Pennsylvanians in the Hart Senate Building.

All 13 Republican members of Congress from Pa. identify as pro-life, as do Toomey, a Republican, and Casey, a Democrat.

Polls in the past year have painted a complicated picture of public opinion on this complicated issue. A majority of Americans describe themselves as pro-life versus pro-choice, according to a recent survey from Gallup. However just 29 percent of respondents in a recent Pew survey said they want to see Roe overturned.

The group Americans United for Life, which participated in the rally, ranks Pennsylvania as the number 3 most pro-life state in the country based on the laws regulating abortions.

  5. You have made some good points there. I looked on the net for
more info about the issue and found most individuals will go along with your views on this website.

  6. Oh yeah?!?! Well I heard there were A BAZILLION people at the March. I know that because pro-life advocates told me so.

No reason to be skeptical of those numbers.

  7. Great to see the numbers growing each year as more and more people realize that abortion of convenience (no one can convince me that over a million per year are rape, incest, or medically necessary) IS MURDER! And these tiny infants in the early stages of life until birth are truly disadvantaged by a society who shows them NO VALUE! Most mothers who have had abortions suffer pangs of remorse, many die for the abortion itself, and some later are barren. I am not against all abortions since some (reasons above) may be for valid reason; but shouldn’t the convenience abortions be largely judged murder…. for no amount of semantics can convince anyone that these precious lives aren’t being taken against their will! What kind of course unfeeling country are we to allow this wholesale slaughter of those most vulnerable of all?

  8. Somewhere along the way Frank missed a very important fact. These babies in the womb are living children. It is a scientific, biological fact that at conception, there is a new human being, with all the factors of personhood, who just needs time to develop.

  9. I disagree with Kelly’s statement that the unborn are the most vulnerable in society. It is the unwanted and economically disadvantaged child who is the most vulnerable, the children of homeless and unemployed parents in ever increasing numbers, and the failure of the so-called “pro life” movement to acknowledge care and support of these children after birth. Many in the “pro life” movement are also PRO WAR. That is a stance that cannot be reconciled.

  10. What is it about abortion that makes otherwise sensible people on both sides of the issue sound like raving lunatics?

  11. “Pro-Lifers” should focus their attention on the killings of live innocent children by guns that are devastating our communities. Put your efforts on the living, and work to stop war and poverty and guns from killing us. Or is it really just about control of women?

  12. Roe v Wade was 40 years ago, and is settled law. Instead of fighting the same old losing political battle in religious garb, I’d like to see these so-called “pro-lifers” do something positive to prevent the epidemic of miscarriages of wanted pregnancies by supporting universal health care, paid maternity leave and Planned Parenthood.

  13. Today’s Times Leader featured a picture and story on the March for Life. They headlined ‘Thousands’ in attendance. That’s a lie. We were 500,000 strong — a street in width, and from the National Mall to the Supreme Court. A helicopter hovered possibly to calculate the numbers. Mostly young people from every State in the Union represented. Cold January was selected for Roe v. Wade, I think, to discourage dissent. Nice try! Chris Calore, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

  14. Please wake up to the reality that abortion is murder of an innocent child. This child may be the man or women who was sent to us to teach the world how to save ourselves from ourselves . How to love as we should love and be at peace with all our brothers and sister around the world. My one wish as a child and now as an adult has never changed. It is that I would live in a world of Peace and Love and that all our children would be safe, happy and dearly Loved. They are our future and remember…. They will be our caretakers someday.

  15. And yet a large majority of Pennsylvania citizens support keeping abortion legal and available, the same majority as across the country. Isn’t it noce when our so-called “representatives” choose to ignore the views of the people they are supposed to represent? “We know better, so shut up!” They make a great case for direct democracy and eliminating all legislative bodies.

  16. Not pro-choice, opponents are pro-death! (or didn’t you get the memo from Mary Elizabeth Williams?)

Glad to see such enthusiastic support from Casey – Not!
