PA-Gov: Pawlowski Releases Ag Plan

You won’t find many farms in downtown Allentown, but that hasn’t stopped the mayor from addressing the agriculture industry in his bid for governor.

Ed Pawlowski released a plan to promote farming in the state earlier this week at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.

“As an urban mayor I may not have true dirt under my fingernails, but I want you to know this: If I have the privilege to serve you as governor, you will have a friend and ally in Harrisburg,” Pawlowski said.

The five point platform is called Growing Pennsylvania’s Agriculture Industry Plan. It includes expanding the PA Preferred Buy Local initiative, organic farming practices and export markets for Pennsylvania products.

Pawlowski wants to expand the Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) program and use tax credits to encourage farmers to modernize their farms.

The Allentown mayor faces a dense field of Democratic challengers to score the nomination. Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz, State Treasurer Rob McCord, Former DEP Secretaries Katie McGinty and John Hanger, minister Max Myers and Lebanon County Commissioner Jo Ellen Litz are still duking it out for the party’s bid to face Governor Tom Corbett this fall.

Corbett already announced the support of Farming Families for Corbett-Cawley this week at the farm show, but Pawlowski is the first Democrat to release an itemized plan for agriculture.
