PA-Sen: AFSCME Endorses McGinty

Katie_McGintyKatie McGinty has secured the backing of yet another labor union.

AFSCME Council 13, which represents over 67,000 in Pennsylvania, is endorsing the Senate Democratic candidate.

“Katie McGinty has always been an advocate for labor and working families. She has devoted her life to public service and also brings private sector experience to the table,” said AFSCME Council 13 Executive Director David Fillman. “McGinty will not only fight for a healthier environment, but a healthier economy for working people, who have too often gotten the short end of the stick.”

“AFSCME Council 13 represents thousands of hard-working men and women in Pennsylvania and I’m honored to have their support today,” McGinty responded. “AFSCME is committed to serving the public by keeping our families safe and strengthening our communities. As Senator, I will fight to raise the minimum wage, protect Social Security and Medicare for our seniors, expand universal Pre-K and access to quality education while growing our economy and creating good-paying jobs in Pennsylvania. I will be a champion for working families and I’m honored to have AFSCME by my side.”

McGinty is running against former Congressman Joe Sestak and Braddock Mayor John Fetterman in the Senate Democratic primary.

  1. Next week, I think we will be hearing a lot about the campaign video just posted by Fetterman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2Gsp4wKH_Q

Three reasons spring immediately to mind:
    — It’s wonderfully inventive, funny, well-done and entertaining. It’s going to be widely seen and shared.
    — It’s going to be controversial, too. At the end of the spot, Fetterman has a kid, maybe 12 years old, wearing and asking about a Fetterman t-shirt slogan that reads: “Trump is a Jagoff.” That should spark some conversations across the state.
    — It uses an old Coca-Cola jingle, almost certainly without permission. The clock is already ticking for Coke to demand a take-down or at least to have the song deleted.

    Should be a fun week…

  2. Wolf, Rendell, Brady, and the rest of the network are leaning on every Dem-aligned interest group to endorse McGinty. Explains all these union endorsement and that questionable League of Conservation Voters endorsement.

Tell me again, what has McGinty done besides finishing dead last in the PA-GOV prmary and milking that government-to-consultant-to-government-again career route? Toomey cannot wait to face this pseudo-green party shill in the general.

  3. Every new endorsement shows McGinty is clearly the ‘establishment’ candidate. What’s funny is she’ll take the union boys for a ride, just like she will screw the environmentalists. Some gullible people never learn. As I have said–top-down union endorsements do not engender any loyalty from the rank and file. They generally vote for whom they like, not for whom their union bosses decide. AFSCME endorsed Rendell when he was Guv and he turned around and forced AFSCME workers with the state into a privatized Medicare Advantage Plan which members I know hate to this day because it is inferior. So much for union leadership. I could go through other unions, including PSEA, AFT, but you get the picture.

  4. Why would any labor union endorse Sestak knowing his reputation for mistreating and underpaying his staff? McGinty is picking these up almost by default. Maybe Fetterman is deserving, but is probably just too unknown to these groups.

  5. Sestak’s campaign finance report is online.

Raised $373K spent $184K, net $191K. Very weak quarter.

By comparison: first time candidate Lindy Li raised $144K and spend $5K for a net of $139K for a congressional district.

Joe’s running statewide, and been running for 6 years, he’s got name recognition and (supposedly) thousands of supporters and volunteers.

Joe’s cash on hand is $2.5 million.

McGinty raised $979K and spent $709K for a net of $270K and cash on hand of $1.16 million.

I have NOT had the opportunity to examine McGinty’s expenses.

If they are advanced ad buys or mailing pieces, or stuff that she can use between now and he election, they these are just front-loaded purchases that have available “equity”.

I look forward to PoliticsPA breaking it all down.

  6. Every new endorsement just makes it a little more creepy. Do as we say or you will be punished.
