Senator Bob Casey is already stepping up to respond to last weekend’s terrible shooting in Orlando.
The Senator is set to announce new legislation this morning that would ban those convicted of committing a hate crime from purchasing firearms.
“In the wake of today’s deadly terrorist nightclub shooting in Orlando, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) will host a press conference tomorrow following his meeting with LGBT community leaders in Pittsburgh to discuss steps the United States government must take immediately to address safety concerns across the country from commonsense gun laws to ongoing acts of hate,” his office announced.
The press conference was held in Pittsburgh.
“If you have proven you will commit criminal acts based on hate, you absolutely should not have access to a gun. It’s common sense,” Senator Casey said at the event. “It is time we as members of Congress do something. If you are a member of Congress and you say you care about security then you have to take steps to keep guns out of the wrong hands and ensure our law enforcement has the resources needed to keep communities safe.”
UPDATE: Sen. Toomey’s office issued the following statement to PoliticsPA:
Senator Toomey knows we could be doing more to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them. That’s why, along with Senator Joe Manchin, he led the effort to expand background checks for gun sales to help keep the American people safe. The Manchin-Toomey legislation came closer than any other proposal in many years to gaining the bipartisan support necessary for passage. Senator Toomey continues to strongly support this measure, as well as others, to make it harder for terrorists, criminals, and mentally ill people to obtain guns. But Senator Toomey also knows that stopping terrorist attacks on American soil is about much more. It’s about stopping the spread of violent Islamist extremism. This dangerous ideology is a grave security threat and we need a much stronger approach to defeating it. That includes heightened intelligence gathering, increased military action against ISIS, and fixing broken policies that undermine law enforcement’s ability to stop terrorists.

How is it possible that the current laws protect the rights of a select/smaller sector of citizens? The silent majority need to rise up/wake up and demand stricter gun laws. NO ONE should be able to purchase a semiautomatic weapon. To support the NRA is to support death – not protection.
Bungy. This is better than nothing which is what mr d. Miller would rather have
Nah. It’s about the guns. The Orlando shooter was from U.S.
GET A CLUE
D. Miller-
It’s about xenophobia and homophobia.
Of course, Pat Toomey is opposed to hate crimes legislation as a rule and likens it to thought crime, completely ignoring the concept of mens rea. If Toomey had his way, there would be no hate crime laws. Something Donald Trump and his KKK backers would probably like too.
Perhaps if we take a sufficient amount of No-Doz, we can all remain awake for the would-be Senator’s next news conference…
The issue is not about gun laws it’s about terrorists and radical Islam and Democrats continue to ignore that fact that’s why Hilary is going to lose
Not enough, Bob. Not nearly enough…
