Katie McGinty won another labor endorsement today, this time from the state’s International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
“Throughout her career, Katie has always stood on the side of the middle class,” said IBEW Third District Vice President Don Siegel. ”From protecting retirement security to fighting to bring good jobs back to Pennsylvania and invest in expanding apprenticeship and job trainings programs, working families need her voice in Washington.”
“We need a senator who is focused like a laser on protecting and expanding the ranks of the middle class and Katie McGinty will be that senator,” Siegel concluded.
The IBEW’s 3rd district represents 40,000 Pennsylvania workers.
“I am so grateful to have the endorsement and support of the IBEW’s Third District, which represents tens of thousands of hard-working Pennsylvanians,” McGinty responded. “As Senator, my top priority will be fighting for middle-class families by increasing access to affordable education and job training, protecting our workers from unfair trade deals and safeguarding Medicare and Social Security for our seniors. Sen. Pat Toomey has consistently supported policies that have left Pennsylvanians behind. I will change that.”
McGinty is running against Sestak and Braddock Mayor John Fetterman in the 2016 Senate Democratic primary. Incumbent GOP Sen. Pat Toomey is running for re-election.

First of all I would like to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your head before writing. I have had difficulty clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints? Thank you!

Philadelphian, McGinty was Chief of Staff for just 6 months before quitting right in the middle of the budget impasse. Her main accomplishment during her time there was to get banned from negotiations for being so unlikable. So much for being able to work with Rs.
The other stuff is revolving door public to private path that made her rich. As a govt employee, she fast tracked dirty coal projects for campaign supporters, so I have trouble taking her environmental record seriously.
Doesn’t it bother you that she is now claiming to be a champion of the middle class when none of her work experience supports that claim?
@jmarshak: “The Democrats have been doing this a lot lately- run a female candidate with no resume”
McGinty has an outstanding resume: Columbia Law School, chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality for Bill Clinton, Secretary of PA’s Department of Environmental Protection under Rendell, a private sector executive, and Chief of Staff for Wolfe.
That’s doesn’t mean everyone should vote for her, but certainly she doesn’t lack a resume.
David, the fact that McGinty only got 7% of the vote shows that she doesn’t inspire voters to vote. She’ll pull the same support as an inanimate carbon rod running as a D and that ain’t going to beat Toomey.
The real story with McGinty’s amazingly poor showing in the Governor’s race is why she stayed in it to the end in the first place when she clearly had 0 chance of winning.
I personally believe she had a deal with Wolf to stay in the race to siphon women voters away from Alison Schwartz.
Wolf suddenly became McGinty’s biggest supporter pushing to get her in as the head of the state party and when that didn’t work out, making her the Chief of Staff with Wolf then giving her $100,000 to her campaign, which McGinty used to repay loans to herself. Extremely shady to any person who finds the money and influence in politics distasteful.
Barbara,
The Democrats have been doing this a lot lately- run a female candidate with no resume whatsoever and tell everybody “it’s time for a woman” instead of talking about anything substantive. And what did that give us? Kathleen Kane.
Would like to know exactly when she did all this fighting for the little guy. Not when she was involved with environmental work. Not the few weeks she had a sprint as chief of staff for Gov Wolf. How come in the years I worked in politics in the three counties surrounding Philadelphia, I only heard her mentioned as an advisor to Rendell,. She has no experience that qualifies her for the U. S. Senate. She is attractive, but so is AG Kane. Why are these unions being duped.?
JoAnn Williams-
Everyone keeps repeating this stupid argument about her coming in “last”. There were about 8 or 9 candidates originally, and a bunch dropped out.
Wolf’s win was so unusually high at 57.86 % (more than the other 3 candidates combined), that it’s an anomaly.
The second place finisher (and experienced elected politician) got only 17.64 %. So, if that had been McGinty, you’d be here saying she wasn’t viable because she got less than 20%.
It was McGinty’s first run for public office, against a strong and WELL funded field. This time, McGinty is well funded and has solid support from the party, particularly the sitting governor and the unions.
So, it’s pretty stupid to dismiss her with the deck stacked so much in her favor.
The Dem puppet masters are really pushing her. She came in last place in the primary for governor. Seriously, why would they do this? Because they know Joe Sestak works for the voters and not them. Too bad that is how politics works. This is really risky behavior on their part!
Still no union endorsements for Sestak.
Does this bind Dougherty and 98? They probably can’t get involved too much in federal elections because of spending caps, but does this bind Local 98?
